Been awhile since I posted on here last but looks like I will finally be picking up an XJ. I was looking for a 1999 but I've found a deal on a 98 that I just can't pass up. Anyway the 1998 I'm looking at is a manual. While I have other more pressing things I want to do with it right away I would eventually like to swap to an automatic transmission in it.

I've tried doing a search but didn't find too much info about this swap. Has anyone done it or know exactly what it would entail? Thanks.

Usually the swap goes the other way, what are your reasons for wanting the aw4??

I'm not sure if the manual has the correct wiring for an aw4, getting rid of the clutch pedal is easy and you would need a different driveshaft(I think) but you will need the transmission controller and wiring harness to go with it.

Find a write up about an aw4 to ax15 swap and work backwards.

A friend of mine here in FL did this to his XJ when he converted to 4x4. I'll ask him what all is involved.

It is doable. But you will need to find a donor rig for all the little stuff, including a radiator if your current one does not have a cooler in it

Yeah I was looking at a few of the AW4 to AX15 swaps earlier. There are a few reasons I'm wanting to eventually swap to the AW4. I've learned that I prefer having an automatic for offroad use, and while my wife can drive a manual she's not the greatest at it so I want her to be able to use it without issues when I'm not around and if she would need to.

Why not just put a 700R4 in there?

I just figured the AW4 would be the easiest swap but looking at it I see some people have done the 700r4 swap on wranglers pretty easily so I might have to look more into it.

One thing to remember on that swap. The overdrive on the AW4 is 14%. ON the 700R4 is 30%. So if you put larger tires on without changing gear ratio, it gets real steep and you will have no power at cruising speeds

What does that mean? OD on an AW4 is .75:1 where on the 700R4, OD is about .7:1.

I think what you are getting at is a AW4 with a 3.55:1 rear end has a finial output of 2.66:1. A 700R4 with a 3.73 rear end has a final output of roughly 2.59:1 and one with a 3.90 rear has a finial of roughly 2.71:1.
