My girls were driving the 99, they got to where they were going, stopped, went in, came out tried to start the 99, nothing.

Dash lights all normal, 12 volts on the gauge, just acts like the NSS.

So I had Mandy put it in neutral, nothing. Then all the sudden it started while we were talking. I'm sure she was trying it, it wasn't magic that it started.

I got home I tried it. I ran the auto trans lever back up and down vigorously several times, nothing.

I tried swapping the ASD relay with the starter relay, nothing. Tried another relay, fan I think, with ASD, nothing.

I guess it could be the starter solenoid. Maybe a hammer and a smile. Anyway I thought I'd get your thoughts on what it could be and it always makes for a good post that could help someone else out down the road.

Could be the ignition switch. Had to replace one on my son's car recently. Not a hard repair, took about an hour. I hate chasing electrical issues. Good Luck!

I am assuming the starter did not grunt at all?

Sorry I wasn't clear, engine did not move. No starter engagement.

Put your finger on the starter relay and have one of the girls turn the key. If you can feel a click, then I would be taking that starter out. The solenoid should at least engage. If there is no click, I would check for current from the ignition. If you get that when the key is turned, then find a way to make a mickey mouse ground for the relay and try it. If you get starter function, then it is the NSS

Just to state the obvious, make sure all the battery cables haven't worked loose on either end.

Symptoms again.

Intermittent start no start.
Engine does not turn.
Volt meter reads 12 volts and stays at 12 volts when rotating key to start.
Starter relay clicks when attempting to start. (swapped around relays prior)

Answer, at least on this one?

Starter, or solenoid.

Took a big hammer and beat on the starter, starts every time now.

Getting ready to go get a replacement at O'Reily's Auto Parts.

I guess we started it four or five times after me beating the starter with a mini-sledge.

$178 later, new starter is install.

Oriely's

Just looked the starters up on Rock Auto. The 99 starters are much more expensive than the 98's.

That is very strange.... I would imagine they were the exact same

Different part numbers at Oreily's. All I noticed was the "start" connection to the solenoid. It's a plug on the 99, just a screw on the 98.
