This is a good site with a lot of good information and helpful members. I am a total Cherokee newb:rolleye0012: I have had an early bronco since 1996 with I have cab top on it. The bronco is slightly modified:smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021: 1995 fuel injected Mustang motor, automatic c4, Quick ratio power steering box, DOM high steer, 31 spline Detroit big bearing 9 inch rear, 4.11's f/r
Pre-runner bumpers, 1/4" rocker guards, 4 pt in the cab rollbar, 35's on 589's, '77 db 44 upfront, wild horses 3 1/2 inch lift, had the whole truck sprayed inside and out with my next bedliner to avoid scratches, and a whole bunch of other crap I can't even think of right now.

At this point in life I find myself needing something with more room. I have two sons, 7 and 11, a pain in the butt wife who never did like the bronco in the first place:banghead:

Now for the newbie part...........WTF does renix stand for

I'm looking to build an overland adventure type truck that can do trails like the Rubicon once in a while, not purely a rockhound more of a camping Overland type truck and DD.

I could use a little advice on what year truck to look for that would suit my purposes the best.
I'm thinking about the long arm BDS 4.5 inch long arm kit with the fox shocks, 32 x 11.50 or 33 x 10.50 tire size. planning to armor it to the gills, DB sliders with the tube, LMP bumpers front and rear, DB Front flat fender kit, hoping they get the rear kit available soon:rolleye0012:

I also have plans for a camping trailer. I'm going to convert my double deck go cart trailer, rooftop tent ,kitchen, the whole nine.

I think that's long enough for my first post, hit me up let me know what you guys think.

I like the list so far! Love the expedition type rigs.

Generally the best year is considered the '99 for its last year of the 4.0 having a distributor, good head design, and high pinion front axle. It also was the first year for the better flowing intake manifold. Past that i would consider the '97-99, then 91-96, and '87-90. You're fine to also go for the '00-01 but they have a low pinion front end, coil pack ignition, and a weak head design at cylinders 3&4.

Renix was a joint venture by RENault and BendIX. They produced the fuel injection system, and ignition systems for the '87-'90 4.0 XJs. They can have a few problems, but nothing that can't be overcome.

Welcome to xjtalk. Good luck in your search for your overlander.

Welcome to the site Todd. So, the Jeep bug has bitten you already and you haven't got one yet? Welcome to our disease :D

Sounds like a good first list. One thing I would suggest is that you look for a mid 97 and up with the Chrysler 8.25 rear end. They have larger diameter axles (29 spline). This will be better for the load you will be carrying and towing. Second, I would steer clear of Fox shocks. They are really a road racing shock and need to be revalved for off road use. They are stiff and will pound you really good on those rocky trails. I would go with Bilsteins instead. You want a shock that gives easily on compression, or has progressive valving and stiff on rebound so you don't bounce every time you hit a pebble. And if you are going on the Rubi, you will be in my neighborhood, so hit me up

All very good info also thank you very much, A good friend of mine is a BDS distributor in Florida, he has that set up only 8 1/2 inch in his truck. He talked to the guys at BDS, Fox owns BDS and re valves the shocks specifically for the Cherokee with their spring rate. And I will be getting the good buddy deal dropship price:bacondance:

Love it! Early broncos are awesome. At least from the ones i've seen, they are a great platform. Would love to see a modern version, but they'd probably screw it up anyway.

Welcome to the site. Love the early Broncos especially with the half cap top. You must REALLY like your wife and kid... don't know if I would be able to give up a rig like that...

Good luck with the search for your new XJ Overlander.

I've had it since '96, it used to be my DD, but for the last 4 years it has become a really expensive workbench for my RC crawlers. It is time for a change. I told her that I am going to spend every dime of the proceeds on its replacement and mabey a dji phantom 2 vision+

Nice! Been into rc on and off for many years. Kinda off it now, money isn't allowing it but its a fun thing for sure. My last was was a cc-01. Wasn't anything really special, a scaler, but kept eating gears and shafts. So i lost interest in it since i would spend $15 on a new gear and within one run it was gone again. Those plastic chassis' suck.

Only had it since Friday afternoon and revamped the whole stereo system, new door speakers, wired in a soundstream reference 200 and 2 soundstream reference pro 8" subs and a Sony Bluetooth head unit and a BIG BOX to put the 8's in. The amp and box with the 8's was part of a competition system back in the day, lil red sounds sexy now.
