After my latest motor dying incident I got to thinking. I could use more emergency lighting. You know to warn sober people away and attract the drunks?

I looked around and damn all the really bright stuff is expensive. The I wondered. Does anyone make colored filters that I could attach to LED offroad lights?

Those LED lights are bright and cheap. They are LED so flashing them should be both fast and easy to do. Just need a color other than white.

I was thinking about something like these...

To my surprise I found something. These!

First I needed to make sure they were of decent quality and would actually snap on to my CREE LED lights. So I bought a pack of 5 for $10...

My current plans are to mount a 20" LED light bar, like the one in the picture here, on the back of my XJ. I'll have a super bright light that I'll be able to back up with complete clarity. I plan on bending another 1" pipe and fit it to the back similar to how I did the front, with the exception that it will be level with the roof. Can droop it over the hatch if I want to open it.

So I'm thinking about a pair of these 4" LEDs with covers on the corners of this pipe. Of course I could just buy enough of these yellow snap ons and cover the 20" I suppose.

Thoughts?

Oh, if you're looking for something to protect your LED from rocks, the filters also come in BLUE and SMOKE. I think smoke would look pretty cool.

Hmmm they also have RED. I could make that 20" rear facing LED a 3rd brake light. I bet that would get people off my a$$ :smiley-laughing021:

I like the idea. Besides these LEDs keep dropping in price. By the time I get around to it they should be paying me to take them :D

Now that I've made this post, making the 20" read LED dual duty makes the most sense. With the 5 snap ons that I have, I might already have enough. Hmmm 4 times 5 is 20. Hot damn! :D

:) :) I've just received 2 of the 4" Crees in the first post, £25 delivered. :D
I'm planning on fitting one inside the Jeep, just forward of the fairlead for the roof winch. It can be a bit of a mess sorting things to winch myself in at night. I'll take the power feed from the 'out' side of the winch isolator, so when the winch it life, the door area will be well lite. :D
On emergency lights, it was a fair spend, (£165) but worth it really, the qualitys there, and you can't miss them at night.

You can pick these 'puc' type road flares up for under £10 on eBay. They're strong enough to withstand being driven over, and can be mag mounted (integral magnets) 9 flash patterns inc SOS.

for a while I owned a wig wag flasher kit. I took two of the tractor lights I usually use for my driving lights and glued a yellow lens over the beam. the fit was pretty good as both have about a 5" dia. Just another way of changing the color.

You had me at flashing bright lights! I'm curious as to how you get the lights to flash? I'll be looking for the write up on this.

Have a couple of their 3 LED versions. Man, those suckers are bright. Thought about putting two in my rear turn signals but may still be too bright for that.

I'll have to research it, but it should be as simple as a flasher relay wired into the circuit. I'd just need a 3 position switch, on/off/flash.

Electronic switching would be another way to go, and well you could strobe it depending on the timer settings.

You can buy LED flasher relays if you've replaced the indicator bulbs with LEDs
(Keeps the flash rate correct. 80-120 fpm in the UK) I would assume they would work for this purpose. :)

They make LED specific adjustable LED Flasher relays....
Not too terribly expensive. Less than $13 for the first one that popped up on Amazon:

While on the subject of lighting, The strobe light (of which I have included a picture) is also homemade. I got two old strobe lens housings at work. I started with your basic NAPA tractor light housing. I used a 100watt sealed beam instead of the tractor light sealed beam. I wired in a NAPA electronic hazard flasher, sealed it all up and you have a good strobe light for under $25. The sealed beam is a wagner 4509.

I have 8 emergency lights on the back of my truck, and one full length lightbar on the roof. Doesnt make much difference, people still dont get over.

I use a Star 9200 series bar. It was free but the filters were missing. I installed amber bulbs from Autozone and left it like that for a year or two.

At First (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5osDsMyI70&feature=youtu.be)

Back over the summer, me and some friends were tracking a southbound tornado that shifted eat towards us. We had about a ten mile buffer (in the middle of the night) so we decided to turn east and head back towards town and ran right into the hail shaft. Busted out the cover of the light bar, my windshield and left some nice golf ball sized dents in my xj. I rebuilt it and replaced the bulbs and filters to what it is now.

How are the LED light covers working for you.. The smokey bears are starting to twitch now when I drive by them. Gonna need to cover them. Looks like we have the same style of bars. And I've been looking at these covers wondering too if they would fit.

Here's a picture of the light I mentioned in my previous post to this thread.
