Ok. We've all seen write-ups on this type of snorkel and after a lot of searching I have yet to find any write-ups about the aftermath..

So here's one for y'all to read and hopefully help you in deciding if you want to go this route.

I'm referring to a cowl type snorkel. The install was a breeze. My only stress with it is to watch what comes up over your hood. Also the air box bolts are a pain to water seal as you will see in the pics. I've been out wheelin 3 times now since this mod. I've had water up over the hood with almost every hole I've hit. Also had water and mud rain down on the cowl from the wheels that are offset sticking several inches past the fenders being in deep holes. I do get water into the intake and into the engine. Nothing like it would be if it was stock. But I'm still not sure if the water coming into to engine is from the bolts or the cowl. This mod WILL IMPROVE you ability to wheel in deep holes but you must still be cautious. This is a great mod for that stealth look. And future plans are to build a shield inside the cowl. This is not a write-up on the building of one. Just the results of it. I will answer questions anyone has on it. So with that said, here are some pics showing the part numbers, some build pics, and after pics when I got home and inspected the air box.

First the build.

This is the second trip. I don't have any other pics of it or the after pics but this is one of the holes I was in.

This hole had my diff caught and I had to get pulled out. We went into the hole and the rut just dropped. All four tires where off the ground.

As you can see you still get water if you are not careful. Our xj is not a daily driver so I can't tell you what the results are for driving in the rain. But if you want to keep the cost down under $30 and keep the stock look you might want to go this route. This mod WILL allow you to wheel in holes that a stock box can't, but it still can't compare to a outside pillar snorkel.

As the build continues with adding a deflection shield in the cowl, ill keep this post updated.

Should route it to the other side of the cowl. That's what most do. I been thinking about this mad for awhile

I'm not most people... HA! A little inside joke between my wife and i..

I've done this mod about a year ago. I moved it to this forum to share with y'all.
Figured it would be better on this site for reasons I'll keep disclosed.

My wheeling has changed from finding the biggest and deepest hole, closing my eyes, both hands on the wheel, pushing the GO pedal down and hold on, praying that I'm still rubber side down when I get to the end.

Since then it's take it slow, stay out of the mud and take technical trails.
What I've found the results to be are this works very well.
Water crossings I take never go over the hood. And any water that I fling up on the windshield if any tend to drain off before the cowl.

Rain was a big question with this mod. But I've discovered that it isn't a factor. In fact, looking at my friends stock box after a drive in the rain. I've noticed that it collects quite a bit of water. This cowl mod keeps rain water out. Was a little surprised by that.

Basically, if you keep calm this driver side works quite well.. But if you run full out, yes it will take in some water.

By the way. How do you like the brown dog mounts

I liked the idea of the cowl not being open right above where the intake is.i like the little extra area the water would have to go, also the water would have to go over the drain.i dig it though, moving the intake point up.

Your xj looks familiar.. It's not the one sitting on rt322 with a flat I passed today?

Here is how I did mine, a few plumbing fittings will work if you don't have abs and I've never had water come into my air box.
