That is a big subject Cory. For rear end either late XJ Chrysler 8.25 or early XJ D44

Everyone's opinion will differ on that Cory, if your looking for a bad ass mod, check out a Clayton rear coil conversion lift kit, one of my favorite things I have done! Also lurk around here and check out people's builds, lots of us have links in our signatures, you're bound to find some great ideas!

all depends on what you are looking to do with the XJ.. What you are looking to spend on said mods... Best mod is the one that allows you to enjoy your XJ more doing whatever it is you want to enjoy doing...

i pretty much want a daily driver that i can take trail riding or off roading and not have to worry about anything breaking. And $$$ wise i want to spend 5 big ones after i get another decent xj.

3" lift and 31s and a rear locker will do wonders and give you lots of capability

what year xj? If you have a dana 35. A 97-01' chrysler 8.25, which has 29 splines is a cheap upgrade and it doesn't cost or take too much to make them decent for wheeling. I'm building up my 8.25 on 35's with a locker. Disk brakes from a Liberty bolt up b/c it too has a 8.25.
The Dana 30 is fine, but can be stupid expensive to upgrade, just depends what you do. A decent lift of 3.5" will allow 31" tires. If you have a NP231J t case. That thing is fine. You could easily dump 2 grand into of course.
Leave the motor alone if it's not broken. I got 345K miles on mine and it only leaks oil.

small lift, tires and you can do all sorts of stuff. $5000 is a good bit to work with. Tires, locker, bumpers, winch, tires, armor. tire carrier.

I said it before and I'll say it again. This is the best mod you can make on your pre 96 xj

Couldn't agree more Nicky. Taking lots of pics is great when you've gotten yourself completely upside down when wrenching and need a reminder of how things go. :D

Tyres. It's the first thing I change on any 4x4 I've owned. Biggest increase in capability for the least effort, and in most cases, with a set of 235x75x15 MTs (29") you get an extra 2" of clearance at the diff FREE. :D

im actually looking for a 92 to 96 xj 4x4 manual if i can find one. the rear end wont be a problem my dad knows a friend that owns a company that builds rear ends so that will be a cheaper up grade and i want to keep the original 4.0 sorry no chevy swap. or put a stroker kit in it. i do like the cluster upgrade xj wheeler that looks bad ass. and thanks everyone who put in their input.

I really like doing the little stuff. Big things are great but they usually cost a fair chunk of money so I keep my mind busy doing the smaller stuff. And to me, its what makes a vehicle complete. Some of my favorites are; Led conversions (dome lights, front turn signals, gauges), Led lightbars, some homemade pieces (light brackets, battery hold down, fan shroud, tire carrier, sub grille), headlight upgrades (silverstar housings and putco harness), armor (diff covers, skid plates), cargo tie downs, a couple engine mods, and of course lift and tires/wheels. Well, I could probably go on and on but not everything can be my favorite. :p

Here's a couple threads that may give you some ideas.
