Would any of you experienced folks know the lift range/limits of using a front drive shaft from an XJ as a rear?
My rear drive shaft exploded and I'm trying to be a cheap skate for a bit. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am no expert but I believe this requires you have a SYE on the rear of the transfer case. Do you already have an SYE installed?

I've got a RE hack n Tap with the flat flange. I'm weighting my "Cheap" options right now. I can get a flat flange for a front shaft or just swap out my flat flange for a IRO yoke.

The hack n tap uses a front driveshaft in the rear. That is one of the advantages of using it

I know a front has been used in the rear of an XJ with a 6.5 inch lift. I am using a front on mine with a 4.5 lift.
Anyone lifted higher running a stock front DS for the rear on their XJ?

Really now? I need to take a better look at it b/c it doesn't look like it. Or maybe that flat flange thing is throwing me off.
I talked to a nice fella at RE. I'm just waiting to a reply to see if at all, my drive shaft is KO'ed and need a whole new one. Or if it can be salvaged.

The front of the 231 uses that same flat flange.

If you are just looking to get to work, My commute is 62 miles each way. When my rear end granaded, I picked out the chunks, rinsed, spit and filled it with oil then put my 92 in 4W high and gently drove 13,000+ miles in front wheel drive.
Now I am pushing again with a Chrysler 8.25 and the front end is just fine.

Mind you Gently! Give it a try, if you are not headed for the hills, you should do OK till you can fix it up!

+1 what OldFaurt said.

I too, have run our XJ in front wheel drive for some time, until I could get the rear sorted. No damage.

cheers

Got any drive shaft repair shops in your area? maybe cheaper to get yours fixed than replaced.

The front wouldn't fit. Local shop wanted $400. New shaft $300. After taking off the broken shaft. I drove around in 4H. It felt a little funny. Are y'all doing freeway speeds in 4H?

I have done it many times that way. And yes, it is a little different. It doesn't feel like a front wheel drive car because of the difference in weight distribution between the two

Yeah, you aren't kidding. It really didn't feel safe. I'm kind of a sissy. But I tote the kid around alot. And the last thing I want, is the kid in the car if some horrible happened. I wouldn't be able to live with myself. My commute to work is always traffic.

The only thing you really need to watch is powering through a corner on slick surfaces. It will break loose then and tend to go straight. Other than that, nothing wrong with it
