Now going under the presumption that D44 were only in the rear. Can anyone tell me what the 2001 XJ Sport came with standard D30 or D35 in the front? And is there a way to visually identify with or without having to remove the front diff cover. Also is it possible/suggested to put some kind of dielectric grease (or something else maybe) on the ABS tone wheels and steering knuckles that might prevent rust and corrosion? :anyone:

You have a D35 rear and D30 front. The tone wheels can corrode, but as long as the teeth on it remain it is OK

X2. The xj only came with the dana 30 in the front when equipped with 4wd. And ABS models only got the Dana 35 for the rear. The other option for the rear of your year model jeep was the Chrysler 8.25 but again not on ABS models.

My 2001 Sport thankfully has the Chrysler 8.25, if you're feeling really lazy you can request the factory build sheet from Chrysler, mine took about a week to come back but it can be same day in some cases - http://www.jeep.com/webselfservice/jeep/EmailPage.html?appStr=wccs&titleStr=Contact+Jeep&familyStr=brand&franchise=J&actionURL=%252Fwccs%252Fbrand_forms%252Fus%252Fweb form.jsp&promotion=null&category=U

If there is any doubt, look at the differential cover and compare with these
