The aftermarket hitch on my XJ hangs down about 10" from the bumper, needless to say it bottoms out pretty often - anybody know of a hitch that is more compact ?

Hidden Hitch brand is what I have on my Grand. I have seen them on other vehicles and they fit up tight but I'm not sure about a XJ. You might take a look at one of them.

The stock one on my XJ fit tight up on the stock bumper. If it hangs down that far, perhaps someone adapted one from another vehicle to your XJ

Here is a pic of the stock one from my 99. Sounds like it may be one of those 1 hitch fits 30 different vehicles... like sold in Walmart stores.

I forget the brand that I have on my 2000, but the rear is nowhere near that far away from the bumper. But it is a hitch made specifically for the XJ. I also have one on the front and the same holds true there.

consider new fancy bumper with hitch in it...
seen a cool claymore hitch cover the other day. rather cool. but $40
