Does anyone know what the small bolt and clip type thing is that bolts to the bearing caps on both sides of the 8.25? They sit right on top of the bearing caps and look like they are adjustable...Thanks!

Those are called straps, and they are not adjustable. People in the driveline business suggest replacing them every time you remove them due to stretching. Myself, I only take one bolt out and loosen the other one so it stays in the same position and allow me to reuse them.

Thanks! what exactly are they used for, I have not seen them on any of the Dana units I have worked on...also they seem to be slightly off set left and right side are not in the same position on the straps...is this normal?

U joint straps are used on a number of other vehicles, including the D70s I had in a one ton power wagon I had. They are cheaper to produce than U bolts for the yoke

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear on what part I'm referring to...It isn't the u-joint straps...the part I'm talking about is inside the differential and bolts/clips to the bearing caps on either side in the housing, has one bolt on each and connects a clip or something to the bearing caps the caps have two bolts top/bottom on each side.http://https://www.google.com/search?q=pic+of+8.25+differential&tbm=isch&imgil=EhQiPwIZBnw1TM%253A%253BOPO-PlcpVdOFNM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.cherok eeforum.com%25252Ff51%25252Frear-zj-disc-brakes-cherokee-xj-chrysler-8-25-a-57807%25252F&source=iu&pf=m&fir=EhQiPwIZBnw1TM%253A%252COPO-PlcpVdOFNM%252C_&usg=__l3QLE1I9LPqlpBJPd4NS4F0e5fs%3D&biw=1886&bih=521&ved=0CDwQyjc&ei=4aBGVIvzO4bOmwX2g4FA#facrc=_&imgdii=_&imgrc=EhQiPwIZBnw1TM%253A%3BOPO-PlcpVdOFNM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.cherokeeforum. com%252Fmembers%252Fdmc-8827%252Falbums%252Fzj-rear-disc-conversion%252F28883-img-0312.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.cherokeeforum.co m%252Ff51%252Frear-zj-disc-brakes-cherokee-xj-chrysler-8-25-a-57807%252F%3B614%3B460

In the pic they are on the left and right bolted to the bearing caps...

Whoops, I am sorry for the misunderstanding. Comes from not having pics. Those little tabs keep your carrier bearing adjustment from changing. On that model, the carrier bearings are adjusted by two slotted nuts inside the bearing caps. Those fit into the slots and keep them adjusted properly

Ok...makes sense, I have never seen those on any of the Dana axles, so the fact that they are not perfectly centered is normal? they seem to be a little off from each other, like in the pic...And thanks again for the info.
