I have developed a circular metal grind up front when I turn and a wobble at 55 mph in the steering wheel. I have replaced the bearing about 30k ago. Is this U joints or Hubs? How much would it cost to replace either one of them by a mechanic? Would it be worth an axle swap instead? If so, what can fit on a stock XJ?

That was my first guess. I will check in a minute and post back up.

Ok, I checked everything while in park. Rear drive shaft seems solid and does not have any play. Front drive shaft has some play at the pinon (when rotating) and the U-joint/shaft has some up and down play. I would have to lift up the front end to check the U-joint on the axle but I heard a click from my front right U-joint when messing with the drive shaft.

How much should I expect for all U joints (4) replaced and the rear Pinon seal replaced?

$320 for 2x 5-760x Spicer U Joints and install. Does that seem reasonable?

I had both U Joints in the front axle replaced (though, one was not worn out but I have been told to replace in pairs). Jeep feels more solid in the front now after the install.

Seems pretty high to me

Maybe, I wasn't clear. I was asking about the u-joints in the front axle. But your later comment indicates that those have already been replaced. Although the drive shafts themselves can be a source of vibration, also. I agree with 4.3lXJ about the cost being high.

Well, they told me that my driver side was fine but I have been told to replace in pairs so I had them swap it out. They quoted 1.8 per U Joint for removal and replacement and I think they charge 70 an hour.

So in the end it was 320 bucks, they replaced both U Joints, greased up the front drive shaft (it is fine according to them) and inspected the rest of the vehicle.
