Looks like a nice rig to start with.. I think you should go with 1-ton axles, 8" LA lift and some 40's!! LOL.. JK JK.. What are you looking on wanting to do with your XJ?? That'll help others to give you some serious ideas..

It's gonna be driven on the road a lot lookin for a 3.5" lift maybe 4.5 it has a rear 3" axle u bolt so it's a 8.25 correct ? Is this better than the Dana ? This truck is mint 94 k miles no rust looking for quality parts and I will prolly piece my own lift kit together because it seems the best way to get the best parts for the least $. Anyone have any suggestions. I also want to install bushwhacker fares but I hate cutting the body. I say I won't be doing much wheeling but I can see that changing here in the near future.... Is it a bitch to install bushwhackers? If I'm not confident could a bod shop do it?

First off, welcome to xjtalk and thanks for joining! Wish my jeep was that clean! Really scored a nice one by the looks of it.

The 3" axle tubes are correct for the 8.25 rear axle but just to be 100% feel free to post a pic of the diff cover side of the pumpkin so we can confirm. The 8.25 is a better and stronger axle than the Dana 35 (the other rear diff equipped in XJs). You can build them to handle 35-37" tires. And bonus, since yours is a '97+ it would be a 29 spline model which is stronger than the 27 spline offered in '91-96 models.

Since you want to piece together your lift you will want to look into Ironman4x4.com. The control arms are dang near bulletproof. For the rear go with lift shackles and then get whatever more height you want from the springs. That way you get more articulation and a better ride. At that height you are fine to go with short arms in the front. But you will need new brake hoses (wrangler yj one are good for a 4" lift), adjustable trackbar, shocks, coils, lower control arms, whatever you use to lift the rear (shackles, add a leafs, new leafs), t-case drop or sye (sye requires new driveshaft) and possibly leaf springs shims to realign the rear driveline. Don't forget the front end alignment too.

Now, the bushwackers aren't particularly difficult. Just a bit tedious. You need to be able to cut the metal (i personally like a 3" cutoff wheel). Plus a drill with bits and a few other tools. The great thing about doing it yourself is you save money for other mods and you know how its done when finished. You can go to bushwackers website and download the instructions to look over. It may look daunting but is really just a bunch of small steps.
