Hey everyone, I'm noticing a lifter tick in my engine so I figure it's time to really consider the oil I'm putting in the engine, especially with colder temps coming soon (Colorado). What viscosity should I be using for the colder weather? I've been using 10-W30 for the past 8 months. 4.0L, 180k

Some may scoff at this but...

I've always had good luck with substituting a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for 1 quart of motor oil at oil change time. It a lighter viscosity so the oil in your crank case will somewhat be thinner after they mix. It has a detergent action which, (in my experience) cleans the lifters and keep them quiet. It tends to evaporate over time so you engine will seem to use a bit more oil between changes.

I use to have the same lifter tap by the sound of it. That is, until i started using 5w30 in the winter months. Now, down in Texas we don't get as cold as you guys but it will still be helpful for the motor to start up a little easier.

Sent via messenger pigeon - i talk, he types.

Is it common to use 5W-30? No risk?

I put in 5w-20 since it was on sale, hope I do not ruin it.

You'll be fine. The FSM recommends 10W-30 but you will be ok using 5W-30 or 15W-30.
