so i was hunting for Dana:bacondance: 44's for my xj on ebay the other day, and come across a post for front and rear Dana 44's off a 98 grand cherokee, the guy said that 1993-2001 grand Cherokees had front and rear dana 44's, can anyone confirm this for me?

Yes and no. No grand cherokee ever came with a Dana 44 front axle, so that's the no part. The yes part is that some came with a Dana 44 rear axle (or Dana 35) but it has a weak and costly aluminum center section as well as coil suspension brackets so it is not a viable option for an XJ. Sorry, somebody didn't know what they were talking about.

Sent via messenger pigeon - i talk, he types.

The rear is actually a Dana 44A. It is different than the usual D44. With about an hour of work it can be very serviceable though

Everything I've read and seen in junkyards says that they only had Dana30 fronts and either a Dana35 or Dana44a rear axle. Even the 98 5.9L V8 in my junkyard has a Dana 30 front. Curious as to what year and V8 this dealership was talking about?

Yeah pretty interested in year(s) had D44 front.. I've looked all over online over the years researching possible OE upgrades I could find and pick up out of the JY.. and never saw anything about that as even being a remote possibility!! Not going to lie though, if there was ever a year... you'll probably never find one that still has the axle in it.. lol.. I think you'd be better off looking for a set of axles elsewhere.. cause the D44A I've read was a massive PITA due to the money needed to get it there to where it'd be feasible for hard wheeling!!

The 44A can be made much stronger simply by pinning the tubes. Costs about a buck to do it if you have a drill and tap
