You know you can put a earlier model head on the 4.0. I wouldn't replace a cracked 0331 head with another ticking time bomb 0331. 1995 is one of the highest flowing heads, btw. :D

I read that Jeep changed the casting so that the 4.0l would get up to operating temp faster and improve mpg. They redesigned the intake to put back the horsepower they lost with the new head design.

I'd say if he already has an 01 XJ, to replace that head with a 95 head and then keep that 01 IM as it is part of the 99+ IM's that are so much better flowing then the older IM's.. And heck if he really and the time pick up a 4.2L crank & rods and have a nicely setup 4.5+L (depending on parts chosen) engine in the 01 XJ!! That is my plan once I have another 97+ to rebuild, or heck might even do it with an older one just to learn and find the best options of parts to put together..

Reading the comments on there is kinda funny. You can certainly tell the folks who have owned an XJ and those who haven't apart.
