Lets talk axles here. What can you put under the XJ, front and back, for no modification, little modification and lots of modification.

Seems the Dana 30 H/L is a pretty good front axle be everyone runs from the 35. So what is the combinations you could put under the XJ?

D44 out of an early XJ is the strongest and most modifiable, the Chrysler 8.25 is the next choice and the most common. But then again, I still have my locked D35

Just installed 4.56/Trac-Lok in my 27 spline C8.25. internals looks not so good, planning to replace side/spider gears with clutches. Googled a lot, found full set with carrier. Is it possible to obtain internals without carrier?

btw, spider gear from open carrier is different than trac-lok spider gear? Crossshaft pin is different, one from open carrier have a flat areas where spider gears sit

Good questions Od. Yes you can buy just the internal spider gear, cross pin and side gears. If your carrier is in good shape, you can repair those parts and not have to touch the adjustments on the bearings as long as you don't remove the carrier. Now to the question about any differences in parts from trace-lox and open. Most of them do use some parts like cross pins and spider gears that are the same. Saves retooling. But side gears are different. They will have splines on the outside and inside of them. Standard has splines only on the inside

Yep, XJ Dana44 and Chrysler 8.25 are the only rear axles that are bolt on. Go for the 97+ C8.25, they're 29 spline instead of 27.

The only bolt on for the front is a TJ Rubicon Dana44 but I've read those aren't as strong as a regular D44 like out of a Full-size Wagoneer. They have the D44 center section but the rest is identical to the D30.

In addition the Rubi axle still has unit bearings instead of spindles. If you are looking at running tires larger than 35, those bearings don't like it

Lately I've been running across alotta folks who swear by the ford 8.8. Even over the Dana 44. I'm personally building my 8.25. It's a great axle for damn near all our needs. I think the offroad community (Pirate4x4) think you need a Dana 60 just b/c you're going offroad.
Tons would be awesome and all. But I'll argue that one really doesn't need them.
Now if the 8.25 wasn't a C-Clip axle. I think it would get more attention.
But another thing is. For the folks that know how to fab, will ultimately find it cheaper for them to throw a Dana60 or 70 or 14 bolt under their rigs.
I'll be letting you know how a stupid expensive Dana30 holds up to daily driving and wheeling trips.
But essentially you are limited to a HP or LP Dana30 up front or the already mentioned Dana 44 in in Dana 30 trim. The rear would be 8.25, 44, 8.8 (with minimal fab). After that. You're looking at some fab skills. And at that point. I'd go with one of these RuffStuff housings, throw on a Strange 3rd member, and be done with it.

Curve ball for ya. I have ABS and want to keep it. Which axle do I choose?

D35 is the only choice

Ouch. So is there anyway to fool the computer to thinking the ABS on the rear works?

abs just gets in the way when wheeling

You will need the sensors on there. If the rear is disconnected, it will not let your rear brakes work at all. I suppose it could be changed over, but I have never done it and I know it will take some fabbing

I think it was spyder that has done dana 44 for again I think it offroad or 4x4 when they did a XJ biuld I will see if I can find it. They install the abs onto there rear axles.

They make c clip eliminators...anyone doing gear work should install eliminators for cheap insurance. Ive used em on a few gm rear ends for strip cars.

I have two Dana 44 rears that I got from 89 Cherokees. Found them on Craigslist. One has the Ford 8.8 disc brake setup, the other one is drums. The one with drums is geared at 3.07, open diff. The rear with disc brakes is also an open diff, but with 3.54 gears. I haven't installed it yet, but will be soon. My 97 Cherokee has the Chrysler diff, with 3.55 and an open diff. I will be selling off the Chrysler diff when I pull it.

Last year, I purchased a Power trax for my 97 XJ with a C 8.25 29 spline diff. When I went to install it, I found it had a 27 spline unit in it! I'm still looking for a 29 spline carrier and axles.
