My 2001 jeep cherokee threw a rod. This is my first jeep so don't know a lot. I was wondering if any 4.0 will fit. Like different years. I do know mine has two fans not one like a grand cherokee I looked at. And where would find a motor around parkersburg West Virginia area. Thanks.

So if it has a distributor it won't work?

You have to have a 99 and up 4.0 from an XJ or TJ

Was the 99 a mix? Mine doesn't have coil packs.

As far as I know, yes there were some 99s with coil packs

If your existing cylinder head is undamaged, you'll have the wider choice of a short block 4.0 engine from a '91-'01 Cherokee or a '91-'06 Wrangler, though a '96+ short block would be preferable and is probably easier to find. I'd strongly advise you to have your '01 head magnafluxed for cracks even if it appears to be OK.
If your head is toast you'll need to be looking for a long block engine from an '00-'01 XJ or '00-'06 TJ, though some late '99 engines may also have the #0331 cylinder head that you'd need.
Keep in mind that '00-'01 heads have a reputation for being crack prone so you could either go for a used stock '02-'06 head or upgrade to a brand new reinforced casting from Clearwater or Alabama Cylinder Heads.
How did your engine throw a rod in the first place? Spun bearing?

I believe so yes. I haven't torn it down yet. I've only had it a month. The guy I got it off said he just rebuilt it. It got hot real fast. Would go to 210 like right now. And never held great oil pressure. 45 at start up then drop when it got warm. To about 20. Never had one before but some said that was normal. I was pulling a atv on the interstate when it started getting hot and knocking.

Did he put the right water pump on? And is the belt routed right. Might be something to check into. Some 4.0 motors had reverse rotation pumps

No, it need independent coil packs. Distributor will still be there.

That sounds typical of a thermostat that's only partially opening. If it was new, probably a bad one right out of the box. Not unusual, which is why it's always a good idea to test any thermostat before installing it.

AFAIK, all 4.0 engines have CCW rotating water pumps with a flat edged pulley, so it's difficult to route the belt incorrectly 'cause the flat part of the belt will, by default, drive the pulley CCW.
