My engine (4.0 L) in my 1998 just took a crap. However, I have a spare motor (recently rebuilt) out of a 1990. My question is are they compatible?

My 98 is an automatic and the 90 came out of a manual. I realize that the intake and such might not be the same but can they be swapped out? Also, will there be issues with the computer? I would rather use the '90 engine vs buying one because I know its good.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

The best thing to do is swap the head, intake and sensors to the 90 block and then bolt it all back in. Then you won't have to make any mods

I'm a great believer in the KISS principle so my advice is the same as the previous posters. Just swap the '90 short block engine (minus the head) into your Jeep and reuse the head plus the rest of the existing hardware and electronics from your '98.

I just couldn't do the "KISS" principle and did this http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=17828

Thanks everyone...I'll let you guys know how it goes. I just got the old motor out and there is a 1" hole on the side of the block.

That is to relieve crank case pressure. Ignore it :out::rolleye0012:
