I've searched and can't find nor confirm that the "jerk & pull" method works to remove a 1999 XJ auto trans 'T" shift handle - lots of other years are mentioned but I have not spotted any 1999 comments.
:keegirl:
The reason I'm wanting to remove it is some of the bits having to do with the gear indicator are loose and need fixin'. They look like they were pinned (plastic) together and I want to tap 'n drill (I mean drill 'n tap) 'em back together.

:bang: Boy is my face RED - Now I found it, the thread showed up in box under my post. It was from several years ago.

Block the wheels.

Put the tranny in 1-2 Be sure NOT to have your face directly above the T-handle. If you do you will hit yourself in the face when it comes off

Pull up...hard.

If that doesn't work, get in the back seat and position yourself behind the shifter (watch the face) and pull...harder. It WILL come off.

Yes, powerlifting helps. A hockey mask is a good safety item

In my neighborhood, walking around holding a piece of metal wearing a hockey mask could cause someone to have a stroke...or shoot you!! :D

I just use a rubber mallet. And no problem. Don't remember if it helps to hold the shift button in, or not. But keep it covered, it likes to go flying when the handle comes off the detente that holds it on.
