Hey everyone, I have a very squeaky XJ. All the squeaks are coming from the belt and pulleys. What exactly should I be replacing? I only wanna do this once. On my list is:
-Idler pulley
-harmonic balancer
-steering pump pulley
-water pump
-and a new belt
Anything I'm missing? I really want no squeaks!
Thanks

Have you tried just tensioning the belt ?

Yep, first step is to make sure the belt is tight. Might be time for just a new belt
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4 because my microwave couldn't do it

Yes, tighten the belt. The tensioner is under the power steering pump. You will have to loosen the pump first

Great, I'll start there. I already ordered an idler pulley, and I'm getting a high-flow water pump too so those will be taken care of. I was really dreading doing the harmonic balancer though, should I replace it now? What are the signs of a bad one? Engine is 4.0 with 170k

The rubber deteriorates and the pulley starts walking out off the center.
