Anyone else have unusually low gas prices around them? Ours is down to $3.17 right now. A wonderful sight to behold after the recent string of weeks being $3.80-3.99.

Anything that needs gas or can hold gas I have full. Three straight days now all the pumps around me have been pumped dry.

Heading up to Findlay right now and everything up here is $3.52. I'm guess either my area hasn't gotten the memo, or the rest of the state hasn't gotten the memo.

When you drive fuel hogs like mine (diesel pickups and lifted Xj) you quit looking at the prices. I stick the nozzle in, swipe the card and close my eyes when I tear off the receipt.
My son drives the Xj and he tells me he's getting 12 mpg, I'd rather not know this, that means it's around $7 per day to go to school and back. Ok now I'm depressed.

Our thieving gubberment already gets 0.38 cents in the dollar for every liter of petrol sold ... and it looks like - they will bump it up next week ..

That's cool Carves. Up here in the beautiful Northern Rivers, we'll soon have noxious ugly CSG criss crossing our gorgeous valley. Maybe I can run the XJ on gas. ?

Yeah, Metgasco is trying to roughshod over us. Bentley Blockade is trying to hold'em off. Don't like our chances. Local member has a son on the Metgasco payroll.

I'm American and I agree, so many are fat and disgusting. Lazy do nothing monsters. Ok back to gas prices.

$3.69 central IL prob $4 by June 1st to kick off summer. No reason we won't see $5 or $6 in the next 5 years.

So I am looking at one year old vehicles Mazda 3 or corolla at the moment.... and a 4x4 is not on my list.
I will still keep my jeep an trick it out and use it for camping. But....

I started my search with 40 mpg sedan vehicles highway, I drive 95% highway.
Which reduces my selection dramatically. Then I look at reliablility. Consumer reports is a good place to look. Unfortunately vehicles made in the USA are not reliable unless you keep feeding them money. Yes I know that once in a while a reliable Amerian car comes along, but in general they are not. So I will be buying a very reliable foreign car. I looked guys and I just can't keep propping up cheap later down the road constant repair vehicles made in the USA. Go look at your 10 year repair rates and you will see.

I'm looking at honda civic, toyota corrolla, mazda 3 and a few others. I've owned American and foreign and foreign is not sucking the money out of my pocket.

Just think if you drive 200,000 miles at $4.00 a gallon right.... follow the rabbit hole on this math.

19 MPG Jeep or other offroad vehicle.
200,000 / 19 mpg = 10,526 gallons of gas x $4= $42,105 dollars in just gas.

40 mpg sedan(I drive 95% highway with cruise control on)
200,000 / 40 mpg = 5,000 gallons of gas at $4.00 = $20,000 dollars in gas.

The difference is $22,105 dollars, plus if you buy american add another $5,000 in repairs over the life of the vehicle and it adds up. But the gas is a huge expense.

The savings will pay for two disney world trips at $5,000 each.
and for me to go find a foreign wife with signed prenup figure $10,000 : )

Just a thought

To me, gas prices don't mean anything, I built a lifted xj because that was the vehicle I wanted to drive! Some people collect hundreds of shoes, or vinyl records, that's their idea of fun. So what if it costs me $160 every two weeks to fill my dream vehicle and get to drive it everyday? It's only money, can't take it with you, no point bitching about stuff I can't control, in the mean time I'm going to laugh every time I fill up cause the money does not make me happy, my jeep does!

Rant over, I'm going for a drive! 😉

Well that's awesome that you don't need to worry about the cost of stuff. I wish I could do that. I do like the jeep but it sucks on gas. Although some vehicles are even worse than the jeep.

like pookapotamus said but I would like to add it may cost alittle more to run it than others but I make it up in the fact that I can save on labor working on it and it is cheaper to fix than alot of the new ones. So for what the xj cost to run it gives back in reliabelaty and fun. it would be nice if it did get better mpg then i could dive it further.

You're missing the point of what I said.

I went from making $34 an hour, to being unemployed for a year, now I make $18 an hour.

Gas is a constant, I have to fill my jeep with 135 liters of premium, it's expensive, and is an eighth of my paycheck, money is tight. But I am driving my dream jeep, that I built myself, to me that's a small price to pay for my freedom and the luxury of driving such a vehicle. What I pay in gas is what some people pay at the bar in one night, or what some people pay for a pair of sunglasses. We each have our vice.

I always fail to understand most fuel consumption discussions.

Yes the 25 year old XJ is a bit thirsty ... compared to a one year old Mazda or similiar.

... but why compare fuel useage of ... two totally different vehicles ..:confused::confused:

If one needs a fuel miser for commuter transport ... then thats the vehicle to own,

... my favourite was a Subaru Sherpa, back in the day. Sounded like a Singer Sewing machine .. :D:D

... but if one wants to survive smacking a kangaroo at 60mph, tow a fair sized trailer ... or even just drag rocks around the back yard ... then a larger, more robust vehicle, is desirable,

.... and the fuel consumption of each ... is just the running costs of the particular vehicles type and use.

Personally I think the XJ ... in a fairly stockish format ... gets damn good mpg ... for what it is.

Of course ... I could buy a new, all wheel drive stationwagon, and get better fuel economy,

... but spending $50k - $80K up front - to save $10 per week, at the bowser ... doesnt compute, in my old school brain ..

Your Jeep has a 35 gallon tank?

I guess I'm lucky that my cherokee is a second vehicle, and is only insured for 7,000 miles a year... Roughly $1,600 in fuel a year.
