I was given a Ramsey winch and I was wondering where I could find parts for them? The motor has seen some moisture, what is the best way to clean these things up?

The motor is probably the most fragile part of it. Pull off the end cap and see what that looks like. Might just need a little cleaning, or could need more

You pull that thing off the bottom of a swamp? Either way a free winch is a free winch. Would be interested to see what it took to rebuild one.

Messing with electric motors scare me. I always feel like I'm going to mess them up even more when fiddling with them. What's the best way to clean these things up?

Notice how only one of the brushes popped out

Pretty much considering it was sitting in a backyard in Florida for some years

Jumping in now :D

OK, you got it apart. You can clean the rust off there armature with some emery paper. It is important that no rust touches anything in the fields on the outside. So the key there is that nothing can touch anything except at the bearings and brushes. How does the brushes and the holders and springs look?

Need I say more... That last brush you see still in the holder wouldn't come loose.

Also one of the screws broke off that hold one of the brushes on and one of the screws that holds the plate on :( Also one of the long bolts that holds the actual motor on

If I can get that brush out it should be salvageable. The brushes look okay, to my knowledge at least. I did do something questionable however. The end cap of the motor has that little round cap on it, well I knocked that out...DON'T ASK

I think that is salvageable. As Wayne stated, new brushes are easily gotten from a motor rebuilder if nothing else. The important thing is the brushes and the guides that hold them

I wonder how much it would cost me just to have this sucker rebuilt?

That is a good question since you are clear across the US from me. You can call around to electric motor rebuilders and auto electric specialists and get some bids

Finally got that last brush out of there. Cleaned up the holders a good bit compared to how they were. All of the brushes move freely in and out of them now so they should be fine. All of the brushes seem fine other than the bit of rust transfer they got on the sides from being frozen in there. I did a little bit of fine sanding and they cleaned up good. How am I lookin from somebody who has more electric motor knowledge? ;)

If the brushes move freely, and the springs that push them in are intact, the only thing left is the bearings at the ends. If they are OK, then put it all back together and start winching
