View Full Version : Hatch struts, gone bad

bad luck

My son's struts on the rear hatch of his xj were doing nothing at all to keep the hatch up. And he doesn't have the money to replace them. So we took a small cutoff wheel and notched each side of the shaft and used this clip to hold up the hatch. It works well and cost about a $1.00

$18 a piece doesn't sound that expensive to me. But I know kids don't always have the money, unless being subsidized.

Personally, I do prefer to have struts that function as intended.

I use a cheap pair of Chinese vise grips from the impulse counter at the part store! http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/02/qyzy6adu.jpg about the only thing I've ever found these vise grips are good far.

I have found that if I am lucky, I get about 2 years from a set. I usually get mime from Autozone. Is there some place better to get them? On the flip side, I still have the originals on my 97 Grand Caravan and they work fine.

If that's the case I've saved 50 bucks! I have been saying for two years I need to replace them. They would done be bad again.

I got my two new ones shipped from Rock Auto for under $30 to my door I believe. I know Amazon usually runs them around $17 as well.

And like has been posted before, use the old ones for the hood instead of throwing them away!

Likewise with RockAuto. I've had mine now for a good 4 years. It's constantly getting opened and closed due to the dog and moving random gardening stuff. Or simply providing shade while I drink a beer.
