Question about grilles...

I know this is probably a wierd question...I have a 97 XJ someone told me the grille is not a 97...looks more like a 2000 grille I can see it was wrecked in the front nothing major just cosmetic, now I'm wondering if it was replaced with a grille from a 2000 if that is even possible...I dont see a lot of difference from the 97 or 2000 seem to be about the same, does anyone know how to tell exactly what year it is from???

I personally perfer charcoal over gas......


97-2001 were all the same, maybe its the chrome that made them think that.

I know it was at least painted after the repairs cuz the build sheet said it originally had all black trim and everything is white on this thing except the grille hell even the radiator had some white overspray on it before I replaced it...so maybe they had to junkyard it to get the stuff they needed...so it might in fact be a 2000 front clip seems to fit ok.

It may be, but as far as I know there is no way of knowing just by looking at it... unless it's the chrome. But if it was painted, no way to tell.

The chrome versions were offered in all years as far as I know in Laredos and limited as part of the trim package. Mine looks like that and it is an 86

You were given correct information about it being from a 2000 xj. That is because its from one with the "Freedom" edition package... only offered in 2000. To my knowledge that is the only '97+ xj to ever get the chrome grille. With just under 3,000 produced its kind hard to find. Although they typically have the headlight bezels to match.

Got no idea about which year, trim packages, had chrome bits .... but any 97 - 01 grill and front panel will interchange as far as I know.


Should be a sticker on your drivers door with a build date ... and the VIN number has the date in it too.

on this website in the rig section(hard to get a family pic), you will find a picture of 3 of the xj's in my family. there is a 99,01 and 98. All three grills kook the same to me.

I could've sworn I've seen a bunch of chrome grills and bezels on ebay and craigslist.... they're probably aftermarket though, so it's possible that the previous owner liked (gasp) chrome
