I have a 89 cherokee. After driving about ten miles I felt a bang/clunk when going on and off the gas pedal also sounded like my t case chain stretched. Pull over and there was some play in the drive shaft. Got it towed to work and it drives fine when cold but once it warms up it clunks into drive or reverse. Shifts fine. Also no chain sounding noise but haven't driven it more then a mile since. Fluid looks fresh and trans mount looks heathy.

I am stumpedhttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/02/14/ehajuha6.jpg

Check your motor mounts... maybe when its cold the rubber is still nice and stiff until it warms up. I noticed my motor mounts more after the jeep had warmed up.

How much play in the driveshaft? Having some play is normal. Unless the play is up and down, then thats ujoints.

Yeah thats about normal. Also I noticed from your pic that your jeep is lifted. Does it have flex joints on the control arms? If so, that could be the cause of your noise. Mine make a lot of noise.

Ya but the 3 link only has 30 miles on it. When it warm up and I put it into drive the truck leans to the right and reverse is leans to the left. Rpms are around 1100.

Thats normal too with a 3link. RPMS shouldnt be that high though.

Much better but the clunk is still there. All the mounts look good but I ll just replace the motor and trans mounts in a week or so. Should I go poly or rubber?
I think it's the whole drivetrain locking in that's making the clunk. When in park I can push the jeep a few inches back.

In my opinion, never having used poly and only going off research and others info, i would go rubber for the motor mounts if its street driven commonly. Poly will transfer more engine vibes through the chassis, thus less appealing to drive down the road. Off road, you don't notice it as much so poly is okay and holds up a bit longer than rubber. Personally i would go with an aftermarket motor mount like Ironman4x4's or Brown Dog's for the fact they use a bushing that is much easier to change out in the future, and cheaper plus the strength is incomparable with stock.

The trans mount is a bit different because there are very few offerings in poly, so for price and ease of replacement, a stock replacement rubber mount is plentiful and cheap.
