View Full Version : Any disadvantage to longer shocks on shorter lift???

My lift goal for my bastard packs, zj coils and coil spacers is 2.5" - 3" (easier to achieve than a solid 2.5"). I'm planning on running Gabriel Guardian YJ front shocks (http://gabriel.com/product-search/light-vehicle-detailed-specs/?partnum=81691) and MJ rear shocks (http://gabriel.com/product-search/light-vehicle-detailed-specs/?partnum=81318) to keep the total lift cost down. Those shocks (with rear BPE's) are equal in length to Bilstein's 3.5" - 4" lift shocks. Would this cause any disadvantage(s) with my desired lift height?

Sorry for the gibberish style layout. :D

They could bottom out when flexing hard and blow the shock out. That's about it.

I'll bump stop accordingly. Thanks for the input.

I'll keep that in mind.

The collapsed height difference for the Gabriel YJ shocks compared to 0-3" lift shocks from skyjacker is; .55" front (GG-14.09" vs SJ-13.54"), and .16" rear (GG-13.87" vs SJ-13.71"), so hopefully that doesn't make too big of a difference when bumpstopping. I can live with limited offroad uptravel, but onroad it would suck.

Thanks for the help Mudderoy. I appreciate it.

Also for reference, I've been on a 3" lift with 4.5" shocks for quite some time with no issues.... But I'm going taller soon.

There is one other thing to watch on the front. Since you will be running a spacer, if the axle falls.far enough you can pull the coil down far enough to pull it past the bumpstop and dislodge it.

For that reason, I'm considering saving up for JKS adjustable coil spacers. Their a little over $200 on amazon, and their benefits and features seem to out weigh their price tag.

Just thought I'd update y'all. The shocks work perfectly with my 3-3.25" lift. I installed 2" front coil "bucket" bumpstops and 2" extended rear bumpstops, and they let me fully stuff my 31's without bottoming out the shocks.
