Hello everyone, I don't have a Jeep yet but I am looking for one as soon as the money and the right xj crosses my path. I found this forum from the YouTube channel xjtalk. I guess my first question is what year xj would be the best for reliability And typical upgrades. Thanks

hey sylardog welcome.
In my opinion and from what i know from 2000 to 2001 the cylinder head casting is weak and ends up cracking and breaks there goes your engine :bang: but from 1999 and under you wont have that problem but watch out for the renix systems and the OBD II there a pain for the do it your selfer.

Thanks for the Info, I'm really hopeful that I can find something from the late 80's that's in OK shape mileage is not a problem because I'm planing on rebuilding the engine anyway. I realty don't like power windows and other things that can go wrong on the trail . The simpler the better lol.

98 and 99 are the best year followed by 97 and then 96

Welcome to the site!

If you're looking for an older one i would suggest going a few years newer to '91-'95. Parts are slightly more available, the cooling system is better (although you can convert an older one, and i like the electrical system better. Plus they're all old enough the few years won't make much difference in price.

Good luck with the search!

I can't wait to find one, I'm already hooked on building this project. It's all I thought about for the past couple weeks.

I didn't realize this was a voting thing! Can we get a lime green '94 put on the ballot?

My choice would be a 97+ and 99 for a specific year. The 98's were very good too. I would stay away from the 2000 and 2001 since they CAN have issues with the head cracking.

Also you'll want one without ABS and even then you'll still want to check for a Dana 35 or Chrysler 8.25 rear axle. The Chrysler 8.25 is the one you want.

Well I think I found an xj that might be of interest. it's a 1992 with a straight six and automatic. I'm going to test drive it on Sunday. I was wondering if there is anything from that year I should avoid or look close at. Any help would be appreciated thanks.
