Knock sensor?

a mechanic I was talking with (see original post http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=16518) about my random sputter and die.
...ordered a new computer =$108.

he said (after I already ordered the day before...) it sounded more like a knock sensor.
where the F is the knock sensor on an '89?
...and has anyone had 'sputter and die' issues related to that?
do they go bad that often?

I am not sure that a knock sensor would do that. All it does is allow the ECM to change the timing. My Chevy ran without one connected

or try to fins a computer reader that still can read a RENIX
