Hi everyone! My name is Will and im from Carthage Texas. im a new xj owner but its not by happenstance. I have been looking for a jeep for a long time and knew I wanted an XJ. I have a 1989 XJ with 153xxx on her. Stole it from a guy for 800 dollars and everything works. Windshield needs to be replaced and needs new tires but that is all. I want to make it a daily driver/ light trail rig and already have a few ideas but a lot of questions. LOL first off ive been told yes and no to the following question: If I want to run 31's or 33's do I need a lift or can I stuff 31's under it with no lift? I look forward to learning from yall and sharing what I can.

Welcome to the forum. 31s are a tight fit. But if you use 10.50s on stock wheels it can be done. Very slight rubbing, very slight rubbing in the rear on full stuff. Some rubbing on the lower control arm at tightest turns. I ran them that way for a couple of years though

thanks for the info. I guess itll be a no go because im gonna run Rough Country steel wheels all the way around. still gonna be 15 inch but with offset and all I bet the 31's wouldn't work on them. gonna have to get a lift sooner than I wanted. LOL

HAHA tell that to the wife. Ive already dropped almost 600 into it in 2 days not counting the cost of it.

It's an addiction, don't worry... Just put it all together slowly, as you can afford, as you can find good deals and as the wife will allow and still keep everyone happy!!

I call it the Cherokee Syndrome... and you seem terminal. :D

Welcome to xjtalk! If you're not against losing some metal, trimming may be your answer to clearing those 31s on stock height.

Welcome!!!

shit, I stuffed 33's under my xj when she had a 3.5" lift....chopped the fenders off and she rubbed when wheeling but that didnt bother me

anything is possible if you put your mind to it ;) (and have the guts to chop away)

Sup Will! Welcome.

I stuffed 31's on 4.5" of lift with no trimming. At same height I can stuff 33's with about 2 inches trimmed front and back. Not sure how the 31s would do with no lift, but the tire will fit in the fender, if that helps at all. You might find some sheet metal at full lock... all the more reason to trim! makes it look good, too!

Im in Tyler BTW

Your right down the road, once I get her road worthy we should wheel sometime.

Thanks for all the input guys ( and Gals) but right now I don't want to do any trimming. ill just stick to stock until I can buy a lift. its gotta be a daily driver and I think the wife would kill me if I took a cut off wheel to it at this point. LOL

sadly she doesn't care about wheeling. all she cares about is it goes down the road and she don't have to jump to get in. she freaked out last time I took her wheeling and all we did was hit a few mud holes and do a little flexing.

Nobody is trying to get you killed. You bought a Jeep you did it to yourself!! :smiley-taunt002: Welcome to the forum you should find all the info you'd ever want on here including how to make a junkyard lift for your Jeep and save some cash. How about some pictures of said Jeep?

LOL I know I do. the problem is $$$ im debating on BF Goodrich AT's or Falken Rocky Mountain AT's. ive used the BF's before on a bronco I had and they worked great. just pricey. The Falkens are supposed to be as good but IDK.

Check out Goodyear Duratracs too. Good tires always don't go cheap

the Falkens aint exactly cheap either. LOL they are about 130 a tire were the BF's are 175 a tire

My brother runs the rocky mountains, they seem like a solid tire from the use he's gotten out of them. Not many wheeling miles but they've held up well to the road. And i have nothing bad to say about the BFGs, except maybe i think they're a little outdated looking. Been running those for years on many vehicles.

perfect. im pretty much going to be in the same boat. mostly highway unless I go to the farm or deer lease. sometimes fishing/launching the boat in the river. maybe the occasional trip to Bolivar. how do they do wheeling? gum up easy/easy clean off?

From what we've done, i think they clear the tread better than the BFGs in mud. Not quite as much grip on hard compact dirt, say a dirt road.
