View Full Version : Well, the time has come....to get new tires

So like the title says, its time to finally get some new tires for my Liberty...im tired of how stock she looks so hopefully getting some new wheels and more aggressive looking tires will help that (along with a couple other things that I plan on getting down the road for her)

Ive already decided on the wheels, that way easy (just plain black steel wheels like what my XJ had), but the tires are what im having a harder time to decide. Right now I have just regular Goodyear Wrangler ST's but like I said I want a more aggressive looking tire but something that would be good primarily for on road and somewhat off road. I am a big time fan of the KM2's since I had them on my XJ and they did great on and off road but I would like to try something different this time (if all else fails I'll just go with the KM2's again, even tho theyre kinda expensive lol)

Heres what Ive narrowed my choices down to so far:

-Hankook DynaPro MT RT03

-BFGoodrich Commercial T/A Traction

and

-Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac

Im keeping the same size (225/75/16) would like to wider and a little bigger but from what Ive read I'd have a loss of power and I'd be rubbing (even with a 2" lift) and since I dont want a loss of power or to do any body modifications I guess im stuck with the same size.

So my fellow XJTalkers, what would you recommend? If theres anything else tire-wise that is not on here that you think would suit me better feel free to let me know, im open to suggestions and I dont plan on getting the tires until mid-january or so(gives me time to make sure my decision is the right one lol)

Look forward to hearing from you all :) :bacondance:

Thanks for your input Steve!!!

Yeah the KM2's I had on my XJ were great, never had a problem with them, gripped nice and didnt wear fast and choppy..unfortunately theyre expensive tho but you get what you pay for

DuraTracs seemed good, I like the tread pattern and they look aggressive plus they have some good reviews so theyre up there on my totem pole

Just don't get them from Walmart. Some that have have reported problems with chunking etc. They have enough buying power to change the specs on then to make it easier to sell them cheap

I would never buy tires from Walmart lol

I plan on going thru Discount tire since I can do a payment plan :D

I've heard that the dynapros wear pretty quick. I planned on putting them on mine and changed my mind because of what I'd been hearing. I've been a fan of goodyear tires for a long time. But I wouldn't turn down a set of KM2's either.

Yeah, the only reason they are on my list is because how aggressive they look, theyre also good offroad from what I read

So far the DuraTrac and the KM2 are the ones im pulling towards but like Ive mentioned before, the price of the KM2's is whats really deterring me from them, if they cost the same as the Goodyears or BFG's I would go get them right now lol

I got a set of the goodyear authority tires which are a wally world tire but I love them. I found them super cheap with nipples still on from a kid on craigslist. That being said I will probably be putting the same tires on my 17" rims come spring time when I take these off. They're affordable not too loud and they wear great. I drive roughly 50 miles a day to and from work and they have hardly worn at all.

IMO if you're putting some highway miles on them, you can't go wrong with BFG AT. Nothing will last longer and still give you some sure footing especially aired down. got em on my truck.

The noise doesnt bother me, I actually like it...im weird I know lol

Hm those arent bad looking tires, and about the same price of the duratracs...
How are they offroad?

My in-laws have the BFG's and like them....they seem like good tires, not as aggressive as I would like but that doesnt really matter (shit, anything looks aggressive compared to the tires I have on my Libby now lol)

They're pretty nice actually. For my needs being on snow and ice and in the snot of mud and gravel they rock. I haven't been stuck since i got them. I had a set of MTR's before these and I like these better. Seems like the MTR's are a harder rubber than these. There's some on road noise but they aren't bad. But they do perform offroad nicely.

There are definitely more aggressive tires out there than BFG ATs. I haven't REALLY tested them, but they've performed well in slightly muddy situations.

Ha! I like a little howl when I going down the road too!

Well its not like my Libby is a weekend crawler, she'll mostly be on the street with an occasional Offroad trip

Have you seen the BFG All Terrain KO2 that they are testing?

Looks pretty aggressive, but should have better road manners than a mud terrain

Those look closer to the Duratracs. Trying for that niche you suppose?

I should of bought DynaPro MTs instead of the ATs ...

..... Then I could tell you all about 'em .. :D

Havent used goodyear since a set of floppy sidewall wranglers, tried to kill me back in the '80's,
... So I have no idea what they are like now - apart from the 5min drive in a new '97 TJ - to get some Hankooks .. :D

FWIW ... I like the DynaPro ATs for my application ... but owners of MTs I've spoken to, reckon they are surprisingly good allrounders too.

BF only rates their KM2 as 2 out 5 ... for onroad use ... so that would make me wary of them with regular highway use.

Personally ... with a lot of onroad use ... I would stay with a milder tread pattern ... but then, I'm not dealing with snow, or regularly looking for mudholes to wallow in.

My suggestion is ... if you cant afford to buy something different as a test ... that might need replacing,
... then stick with buying tyres that you have been happy with in the past.

I've had Dura Tracs on mine for 3 years now. I love them and get comments on them all the time. I haven't had the other type of tires you've mentioned, but I can vouch for the Dura Tracs

Had plenty of BFG All Terrains, they're a great road tire... just about the best wear i've seen... not very good in mud (don't clear the voids well, but since you don't have a bunch of mud it shouldn't be a concern)... haven't ran rocks yet so i can't comment.

The Goodyear Duratrac is a great tire also, everyone i talk to that had them has nothing but good to say. Unless something more interesting comes out before its time, the Duratracs will probably be my next choice.

When the KM2 came out it was my most wanted item for mine. The look and ratings/reviews got me raving. After thinking the cost, both purchase and more fuel consumption due to the more aggressive tread i decided it wasn't worth it just for the look... but i do love their look.

I'll throw out a plug for the Cooper Discoverer A/T 3's....that set we put on the '03 Explorer is wearing like iron here at home, but did great in Moab and Colorado, rides well on pavement, and even cleans well in SC mud with a proper application of the skinny pedal. My wife is an amateur photographer, and she is trying to capture some of old homes and barns that are rotting away here in the southeast...the A/T 3's have done a far superior job to the LTX's she had prior.

I am sold on them for real A/T tire for any SUV that will see more than gravel roads, but needs better manners than a M/T, I will be getting a set soon for my old '91 Explorer too.

Might I suggest using a jack stand. Or did you slice your knuckles using a "spanner"

If I learned anything from watching countless hours of C.S.I is how to properly clean up a crime scene.

Lol you guys are horrible, thread went from tires to swampers to Wayne's blood lol

Oh well, I'm used to the random hijacks now ;)

So far, like I said before, I'm swinging towards the duratracs at the moment, I like the aggressive look and the fact that they're the same price as the BFG's is good

Now onto the size, I'm running 225/75/16 right now, would like to go wider since I like seeing the tire stick out from the fenders but in order to go wider I may have to go bigger/taller. Im afraid of rubbing and a loss of power and since I don't want to cut the fenders or have to regear I may have to stick to my original size.

Any thoughts?

You could always add an inch spacer to it

drakan1908
01-01-2014, 08:58 AM
Go to Tire Rack and get the specs. for your tire size. Then start plugging in sizes and find one that matches in height but wider. I think the +p size is 235/7016, which is slightly wider and the same height.

Not sure how it is there but here in AZ tire places won't even touch your car if you have wheel spacers, you have yo remove them before you get to the shop
