01 XJ 4.0 oil pump

Has anyone ever had an oil pump fail ? Can it be replaced without pulling the motor ? I've experienced total loss of oil pressure several times. First thought was pressure sending unit, replaced. The last time I turned around & drove home about 2mi. By the time I got home the rockers/valves were clattering like a mutha ! Started it a few days later, built pressure & a little quieter. Started another few days later, completely quiet & held pressure. Don't want to trash my motor. Any ideas ? Thanks

Yes, this happens to some 4.0s. If you can get the front axle down far enough, you can pull the oil pan and replace it. Might as well replace the rear main seal while you are at it
