View Full Version : If I Only Had $500... D44 (maybe)

So my next investment will need to be on the axles ~ since I'm pretty much maxed out at 29" tires vs. enough power to get over the hills at a moderate speed. --- currently 3.07 w/ 5 speed

I also plan on doing an axle swap down the road to address things like the 3 piece front axle with vacuum disco... But don't want to drop more $$ than needed.

Solution = Find an XJ on Cragslist with better axles and gears for ~ $500 or less.
This would also give me a few extra pieces of this, that, and the other thing that I may be able to swap.

Digging, I found this: http://eugene.craigslist.org/cto/4137343354.html

The guy claims it's got D44's "all around" = front and rear?
and I need a new left passenger door
...and like the raised roof rails...

BUT NO $$!(*#$(*)$%#!!:bang: to play right now!

So, if there's anyone else in this neck of the woods looking for D44's....

Maybe after the holidays, I'll have a little extra $ to play with

I'm thinking he's full of it. There's no D44 in the front. I got a D30 out of 99' laying around you can have. I think I got a 8.25 too in 3.55 ring & pinion.

...if thats REAL...two D44's for 500 is a screaming deal.
Long drive though, just to "make sure"....
You're other option would be to source a HP D30 for relatively cheap... I see em go for 100-150 all the time.
That would be a direct bolt in for the front, and a decent upgrade.
And you could potentially find one with 3.55's in it.
As for the rear, and easy bolt in upgrade is the Chrysler 8.25
the late model versions came with 29 splines, and some even had a limiited slip.
Most are 3.55 gearing as well.
I've seen these go anywhere from 150-300 depending on the miles, and what they have into it.
So theoretically you could have a serious axle and gearing upgrade that's almost i direct bolt in for 300 or less.
The only other issue you MAY have to address would be the driveline.... but finding one out of a junkyard with the same axle tranny/tcase set up wouldn't be all that hard, especially if you haven't done a SYE yet.

Didn't the J10's have D44 front?

...mostly, I just hate it when I find an XJ with parts I would be able to use like axles and the door
~ maybe a muffler
~ says 4.0 HO

I know Craigslist is a crap-shoot, but I like to dream.
And if I could get D44 with a matched front axle (gears), the door, and an HO... for $500. That'd be a good deal.
I could probably even scrap the rest of the parts for almost $500. :rolleye0012:

I am skeptical too. I don't think he knows what he is talking about

CJ's too?

At any rate, I was just day dreaming about the possibilities.
What I really need to do is deal with a couple core fixes before I head to A$$Crackastan...
and do the rest next year.

:bacondance: told the wife to hit up one of those shows like OverHaulin and have them hook me up before I get back :rolleye0012:

That'd be awesome... But I wouldn't even dream of it.
......OverHaulin = yes

Otherwise, 1/2 the fun of having a jeep is the hunt for upgrades and turning wrenches on the weekend.

I think it's probably a Dana 30 and Dana 35, considering the year and stockish condition. In my experience, people with limited knowledge call any Dana axle a Dana 44.

Looks stock to me. So, it is possible for it to have a 44 in the REAR. But i do agree, he's clueless.

Sent via messenger pigeon - i talk, he types.

The rear 44 was only an option in the late 80s Cherokees. 95 is too new.
I paid 400 for mine, it was out of an 87.

You're completely right! I thought it was an '89, must have confused myself when he said '89 about something else.

So did we find out if this guy is blowing smoke? The suspense is killing me!

Last I heard from him (via text) was that he wouldn't be able to take those pic's of the diff's till Sat... which is when he's having it hauled to the local junkyard.

My guess is he has the towing package with the D44 rear ~ and :ass:umed that they were both...
But there's always that redneck in me that likes to believe it's a CJ front

...or mod required.

case I come across a $500 deal again.
...I see grand Cherokees all the time for cheap

Bolt on: TJ Rubicon Front Dana44 (had Dana 44 center section but rest is same as Dana 30), rear Dana 44 from 87-89 XJ, 29-Spline Chrysler 8.25.

With mod: Front Dana 44 from FS Wagoneer, front Dana 44 from 70's Ford F-100/150/250, Rear Dana 44 from some MJ Comanches, Rear Ford 8.8 from 95+ Explorer

I still think the Dana30 & 8.25 axles are very good (yes they have weak points) for rigs 33" tires even 35's driving carefully offroad. You can deck em out with a truss if you choose to. Alloy axles. Disk brake (rear). Locking hubs. Lockers are plentiful. Ring & pinion (however limited) for up to 35's.
you can go bananas with a 9" or a dana 60. Heck even toyota 8.25 are killer axles. But all require quite a bit of fab work. I think folks price gouge for the XJ D44. Every so often when I do find one. The seller wants 4,5,600 bux for em. Even more if its been under an XJ and the fella is maybe switching it out for a D60 or 14 bolt. But chances are that fella has maybe done disk brakes, locker, gears, and or alloy shafts. Which could be $2500 with said modifications.
