Thanks, I don't currently have an xj I'm on the hunt I figured this was the best place to start. I have been told that a 99 with the auto is the best platform to start with (I prefer stick but if the auto is more reliable than that trumps my preference). I'd love to find one that is lifted mildly and sitting on 31s or 33s with at least ok paint and a clean interior. It will be my daily driver and morph into an overland vehicle overtime. Great forum format, I'm used to thesamba.com for ACVWs so its gonna take some getting used to!

A few things.

The manuals that came in that generation are plenty reliable. The one to avoid is in the '87-'89 xj, the Peugoet BA/10 5speed.

I need to know more on this VW past you speak of. Even though they're not in what anyone would call good shape or running i have a '74 standard beetle and a '72 squareback.

And lastly, or probably should have been first but whatever, welcome to Xjtalk! Make yourself at home. If you have any questions about what to look for feel free to ask.

Thanks XJ Wheeler, I've had a 72 super for the past ten years It has a 2076 CC motor that is torn completely down at the moment, waiting on a paycheck or two so I can put the final pieces of my rebuild together.

My luck has been with just cruising around and looking in peoples yards. I have found several XJs that way but I like the earlier Renix era Jeeps.
You may want to educate yourself on the manual transmissions. As stated the Peugot was very fragile and the throwout bearing was also hydraulic and unreliable. The AX 15 with the external slave was and is pretty rugged.

BTW Welcome to XJT.
