View Full Version : Rear Shock Mount Clarification?

There are a few threads indicating that XJ's can use the S-10 rear shocks with a lift.
So, I was digging around looking at the parts store on shocks as I am putting on a lift (4.5") and needed to pick up some low cost shocks to get by until I have more $$.
The stock parts store list the
XJ as - Upper Mount type Cross Pin / Lower Mount as Loop
and
S-10 as - Upper Cross Pin / Lower Stem (or) Bushing and Sleeve
...with almost 4" extra on extended....
But the
C2500 as - Upper Cross Pin / Lower Stem (or) Bushing and Sleeve
...with 6" extra on extended and a 10 5/8 travel length.
So my question is, what's the difference between the lower mount styles?
... can I use the Bushing and Sleeve on an XJ?
And does that mean I could use the shock from the C2500 to get by until later... as it has the extra 6" extended length?

I don't have the answer to that question, but here is a link and you can figure it out.
First go here and figure out which shocks in any category fit both applications
http://www.monroe.com/en-US/catalog/e-Catalog/
Then go here and compare lengths and bushings etc.

Cool~ Here's what I found = not sure if my brain is on the $$ or not:
the XJ stock has
- L1 Body end / XP7 Rod end....... 12.375" to 20.275"
* there were some with the correct ends, but the longest was 14.125" to 24.00" (Monro Part # 5820 for those looking for a 4" lift AND 33050 is 14.125" to 23.875" as another option)
......still too short.
The C2500 stock has
- LS92 Body end / XP7 Rod end ....16.375" to 26.750"
** I dug through all the LS options that had a larger ID on 'A', but didn't find any matches.
.....I'm going to sort through the XP ends to see if there's any close matches there / and will reply in a bit.
The ends are as thus:
3838
3839 ~ the LS92 Body end is similar, but 14mm 'A' and 1 3/4 'B'
.................................................. . So a thinner diameter on 'A' and wider on 'B'
.................................................. . I can get a longer bolt, but the sleeve is too thin

OK a little more digging and I found:
LS39 Body end / XP8 Rod end ~ 15.625" x 26.250"
...LS39 has A = 1/2" and B = see chart in last post
But more than that...
LS47 Body end / XP7 Rod end ~ 15.250" x 25.250" (part # 34767)
.................................. AND a 15.875" x 27.125" (part # MA764)
The LS47 is very close to the L1 measuring A = 9/16" and B = 1 5/8"
*** so 1/16" wider sleeve than stock and 5/16" longer sleeve.
and the LS47 / XP7 is pretty common on that list. I'll do a little parts store surfing to see what the $$ looks like.

The L1 is on the bottom, or axle end. That is easy to match. So, just to help you out a little, if you get bar pin eliminators for the top end, you can match several shocks that have L1 on both ends.

That makes it a ShiTon easier :bacondance:
The 34767 would be $46 ea. with no pin eliminator...
or with a $20 pin eliminator I could go with a $25 ea. to get me buy
...or $44 ea. for a reasonable low end shock. +
Mucho Thanks:keegirl:

You can get those shocks on Amazon and give XJTalk a few pennies to boot

Just did... $65 for the pair.
... gonna look under before I order the bar pin eliminator ~ with my luck, if I order a set, it'll already be there.
