Not too many people on here have roll cages, but I think that most, if not all of them built their own. Sorry, I know that doesn't help you much, but I don't have any experience with roll cages at all.

It's not just feasible for me to bend my own tubing because I would need a bender for one time

What ever you decide please share your experiences with us. I know I would be very interested in learning more.

I've been thinking about, at the very least, a single hoop over the driver and passengers. Just to have that just in case protection.

I will be making one for TJ Resurrection probably next spring. I have made one for my CJ, but not for an XJ. Welding in the interior is kind of touchy

The one thing I dont like about the D&C is interference....
If you plan on keeping this as a DD, or regularly have passengers in & out of it, it's not going to be very comfortable for anyone.
Even you.
Their bars protrude into the already small door opening of the rear, and well into the door opening of the fronts.
I'm a big guy, (6'3" / 200+ lbs) and I NEED that knee room while getting in and out of the XJ. (again, thats just me)
http://dev.dandcextreme.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/xj_cagekits_025.jpg
I also dont like how they have engineered this cage to have interference with the glove box.
It's even in their disclaimer on the website.

"Some glovebox interference should be expected on pre-1998 models, 1998-2000 models have full use of glove box."
That being said, I DO like how everything comes pre-bent and gets welded together....
http://dev.dandcextreme.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/xj_cagekits_001.jpg

......but, if you dont weld, or will have to pay for someone to weld all this in, well it may make the price tag ($450) not as attractive.
Also, this wouldn't be a project I would use to LEARN how to weld on.
Another thing I dont like is they dont appear to offer a 4 door version of this kit, I'm sure they'll MAKE you one, but I dont see it offered on their website.
And lastly, weld in cages, although are strong and sexy, make working on the interior quite hard....and forget about ever being able to take the dash off to replace a heater core or something like that. Once they're in, thats it...

Another option would be the Ultimate Sports Cage by Rock Hard 4x4 (http://www.rockhard4x4.com/product_p/rh-1012-1.htm)....
http://www.4x4groupbuy.com/store/images/Rock_Hard_Ultimate_Sports_Cage_Jeep_Cherokee_XJ_19 97-2001.jpg

Granted the price tag is nearly twice what you would be paying at D&C, BUT here's what you get....
Modular design.... you can piece this thing together as budget and degree of wheeling allows.
You can add to it easily along the way as well.... such as adding multiple center bars, etc....
http://a248.e.akamai.net/origin-cdn.volusion.com/vdrdr.cmvft/v/vspfiles/photos/RH-1012-1-12.jpg

They make designs for both the 2 door as well as the 4 door versions of the XJ.
http://www.discountjeepparts.com/images/products/rockhard/rh1031-3.jpg

They also have NO glove box interference!
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/516uzgfxBVL.jpg

Now I know some of you may say, "well these things are all bolt-on/bolt together.... thats weak sauce!!!"
Granted it may not be QUITE AS strong as a completely welded cage, but I say look at it this way:
Most of the rock sliders on our rigs, and the ones that are offered on the market, are all bolt-on....
And they see FAR more abuse than what a roll cage will..... unless however you are doing some jeep-speed desert racing type stuff, and are at risk of a high speed rollover.
If thats YOU, then you're prob in the market for a completely custom cage ANYways, and probably SHOULD get a fully welded version.
HOWEVER.... for most of us who do low speed trail and rock, crawling, a FLOP or a rollover, will not produce the kinds of forces that will severely damage a cage like the Rock Hard 4x4 one.
And lastly, the biggest reason that I personally would choose the Ultimate Sports Cage by Rock Hard 4x4 over the D&C cage is there is virtually no interference with the door openings...
http://a248.e.akamai.net/origin-cdn.volusion.com/vdrdr.cmvft/v/vspfiles/photos/RH-1012-1-4.jpg

....meaning.... you can get in and out just as easily as you (or your passengers) normally would without banging into a bar.

I looked at that on the site too. From a personal standpoint, it is really hard to get that top weld with a roof that is not removable. I cannot remember where, but I saw some builder parts that had those joints available

That's prob why on XJ's you see more EXO cages, than you do internal Roll Cages.

I don't see the point of only an internal cage. Even if you roll over lightly. The XJ just caves in. A well designed hybrid inter/exo cage would be a great way to go. Even if you got a bender and dies. I'm sure you'd find multiple uses for it. You could even rent it out or do side projects w it. Or sell it when ur done.

Internal cage would be to save the occupants not the Jeep.

I have to agree with Josh on this, I spoke to the people from rock hard, at their display during jeep week. The guy told me that bolting the tubes together was stronger than than a welded cage, since it spread the stress over a larger area. There was one guy there who had and exo cage with some interior support tubing as well. If it is done right I think an exo cage looks good too. I might do this someday.
