View Full Version : It's not the AC clutch it's the AC pulley bearing

So I figured out it's not the clutch its the pulley and the bearing inside the clutch pulley is squeling and it's getting worse. Can't ignore it forever I guess.

Instead of buying the bearing and installing it by replacing the old bearing.....

cant I buy a pulley with the bearing already installed and I just need to pop it into place?

Does anyone have a link?

The only model information on the compressor on the back end are

GN and 90 but isn't a pulley a standard size?

You need to get the pulley that goes with that compressor. You might look for a clutch assembly at Rock Auto or others. But you still have the same amount of disassembly except for removal of the bearing

I would like to avoid removing the bearing and just pop the pulley with the new bearing right back on and finish the job.

How do I know what brand of compressor I have will a picture help?

I'm not sure what the 01 has. But it will be listed in a parts list when you go to buy your pulley. Quite sure it is not sanden

ITs also not the original compressor. I had a new one put in a few years ago.

The compressor is fine, just the pulley bearings are bad.

That little label on the compressor is rubbed off.

Find a decent NAPA store and try them

So take off the pulley and then go into napa and see if they can match up the bearings. Don't I need a size measurement of the bearings?

As far as I remember, replacing the bearing wasn't so hard, took the mechanic 15 minutes of work. (I gave him the compressor, not installed on the Jeep)
Why would you like to replace the pulley?

It is squealing a lot and eventually it is going to break. I only have one vehicle and if I take it apart and go to napa my concern is the new bearing wont fit and I will be stuck.

bad luck

My son's xj has the same problem. His solution was to park his jeep at my house and borrow my van. Until I get home and can fix his bad bearing problem for him.

So with a puller from autozone will this pulley come right off?
Thanks

Make sure there are no snap rings. I made that mistake on once

So once I remove the snap ring then it should pop right off with the pulley puller from auto zone. Yes?

Yep, it should.

Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4 because my microwave couldn't do it

In theory. I haven't ever disassembled your brand of compressor

I'm hoping to just pop off one pulley and pop on the new one.

Update.

So I bought my AC compressor pulley with bearings already install for $30 dollars which also included shipping.

I bought it from Jensen auto.

email contact is [email protected]
or call 888-311-8511.

Since my compressor numbers had rubbed off I sent Travis a few pics via my sweet cell phone and he told me the model and sent me the part. I paid via credit card over the phone.

The old squeaky bearing came off and the new one went on easy as could be.

I had to buy a pair of lock washier pliers which I will use again and again for repairs.

So $30 for the new pulley and bearings and $20 for the pliers and donuts were $3 dollars. Grand total $53 smackers.
The other option was to get a new AC compressor at about $400 plus labor of another $400, estimate $800.

The squeaking/squealing noise is gone and I can hear the normal silence.

Just wanted everyone to know that you can do this... This is so easy to repair and the AC runs great.

Thanks everyone.
