Hi, and thanks for the welcome! This looks like a great site to gather info.

I do not have a XJ yet, but will be getting one soon. I have never owned one. My dad bought one brand new in 1985, and as a kid I just loved that thing! It was a Cherokee Pioneer. It had the 2.8 auto, and even as a kid I could tell that thing was gutless! Growing up I drove a couple different ones quite a bit and always thought they were great little rigs.

It is funny you start new members' level at "Hummer H2", as that is what we have. :D It's a 2005 and I have 37x12.50-17 Cooper STTs on it and have stripped all the chrome off of it. We have a family of 6 plus a 115 pound Lab. We like to wheel and camp, and needed something we could fit all of us into and be off road capable. Options are pretty limited with a family our size!

Our XJ will be a combination DD grocery getter for my wife, and trail rig. My two oldest boys are getting old enough to be able to start driving on trails, and my wife actually came to me and suggested we sell her car and get some kind of smaller 4x4 that she and the boys could learn to wheel in!!!!:D How cool is that? :D So, naturally, the XJ is the obvious choice for a smaller 4x4.

From doing research on here and other places, I have pretty much decided I want to find a '99 with 4.0 and automatic. If I could find one already lifted that would be great, but it looks like there are some decent options out there for lifting for cheap. I am thinking 33"s is probably the biggest I would go for tires.

Anyway, I'll be lurking around here researching everything I can think of for awhile before we find one. Thanks for the great site!

By the way, I am not a "brand hater" of anything. I have a H2, and I wheel with Jeeps, Pathfinders, Chevys, etc. My philosophy is we're all out there to do the same thing and have fun, right? Obviously, driving a Hummer I have gotten plenty of snide comments, and I've heard plenty of Jeep comments from Hummer people. You'll never get that from me. I'll drive anything with 4WD if it fits my purpose! Here's a couple pics of my truck.

Hey Robert, welcome to xjtalk! That's pretty cool. I think H2s should get out on the trail more, i mean they are built like 3/4 ton trucks and people wheel those. I guess the cost kept them away. But i bet you'll see more and more as they get older and cheaper. I remember sitting in one at an autoshow when they first came out. It was so massive at the time.

Anyways, thanks for joining and feel free to ask questions or just have some fun. Good luck with finding that '99.

:welcome: Yeah the Hummer H2 is how we encourage people to post. As you post that changes. As you're probably aware there is rivalry between different manufactures and even different models of vehicles. The general thoughts are a H1 is a real off road vehicle where as the H2 is something GM threw together on a truck frame to capitalize on the H1 fame and use by the military. I'd love to have a H1. I wouldn't trade it for my XJ though. Just my opinion, doesn't make me right.

We all have our opinions about things as long as we're all respectful then I think it's okay.

Thanks for the pictures, it's always fun looking at pictures.

Thanks. I do love my H2 on trails. It is slower going in the tight stuff for sure, but if I can fit between the trees it does really well. It is definitely no mall crawler! It's got the trail scars to prove it! ;) I agree they were really overpriced. They were originally going to align the Hummer brand with the GMC truck, but some of the brass at the top made them align it with Cadillac. I think they would have done much better with their original plan!

Yep, I'm very aware of the rivalries! Like I said, I don't buy into all that. And yes, it does exist to some extent within the Hummer community. As I am sure it does within the Jeep community, i.e Wrangler vs Liberty or Commander, etc.

I will say though, despite the urban legends, the H2 was certainly not a body kit on a truck frame. Same as the H3 is not Colorado. They do share common parts, but uniquely different.

Thanks! You just might.

I didn't know that part. I agree, and i'm sure they would have been more of a success. Although for some reason greenies wanted to bash on their fuel efficiency, when plenty of vehicles are just about the same if not worse.
