I'm asking what the gauge of sheet metal is on our XJ's would be?
I traded a few cases of ammo for a Lincoln electric (A/C only & stick).
One of the projects I'd like to attempt is cutting out my rocker panels and replacing them w 2x6" 3/16" box.
From my understanding, mig would be best, but guess who can't afford a welder or a fabricator to do the work for me? Even if I did all the prep work for the welding. I just don't have $90 an hr to pay a fella.
I want to practice my arse off before molesting my jeep w no skills. I've got 50lbs of 6011 1/8 rod. The welder is commonly referred to as the tumb stone or buzz box. The rod has been stored properly and not very old (6 months).
I figure if I pick "X" gauge sheet metal & 3/16 steel. I'll just practice enough.

I will have to measure that later DeeJay. By the way, if you cut out the rocker panel you might be happier with 3X6 to fill that area

I have to admit. I'm saying 2x6 based off what I've read others doing thus far. 2x6 seems to be the common replacement. I'm not planning on going so high up to where I have to cut my doors. Honestly, I'm too chicken shit & lack skills. :) And I figure 2" of extra clearance isn't that big of a deal at this time (I know that might change). I'm not against 3x6".
I have a digital caliper. But I'm not sure where to measure. I'm guessing fenders would be thinner than my intended area? At least I hope

Its about 18g metal. Good luck with that welding job. Most skilled welders I know cant even weld that thin of metal with a stick welder. Do you have a torch? If so, I'd use the stick welder to weld the rockers on the thicker metal areas, and use a torch to braze weld the thin sheet metal.

Does this qualify as a torch?
