so as far as I can tell, the xj wagoneer is just another trim level of the xj.
with a different gril and lights.

but when I go to rockauto it is listed separate from Cherokees.

what exactly is the difference between the 2?

I'm assuming you mean this Wagoneer, that started back in 84??

In which case, I don't think there really was any differences aside from the grille, headlights and the wood on the side, but I very well could be wrong...

As long as it is an XJ, yo can get XJ parts unless specific trim is desired. The original Wagoneer which had a Cherokee Chief and Grand Wagoneer trim levels with a few mechanical variations. Those are completely different vehicles from ours

I imagine they show a separate category for xj wagoneer, so that the fullsize wagoneer people and the xj wagoneer people dont click on the wrong thing, and end up with the wrong part.

they have a separate listing for wagoneer and grand wagoneer too.

I always thought they were basically an xj with wood trim and double headlights.
which is why I found it odd that they had a separate listing.

Like maybe better suspension or something...

In 84 there was a "V"-6 available, along with the 4 banger & 4.0.
.
Mechanically.....you might be seeing this as the difference, parts of the wiring harness would be different for the lighting along with a relay or two for the Wagoneer....

WAY, way back in the day......I remember looking at a Wagoneer that was towed into a buddy's yard...it was an early model, it had the V-6 motor in it, I think the transfer case was different as well. I was told to run fast and far from that driveline....(not good motors)

im a big fan of the wagoneers....their look just screams classic 4x4.....there is one that shows up to jeep functions in my area that is really clean and well taken care of

Besides the headlights, front turn indicators, and sticky-tape wood siding, they also have different tail lights with red (rather than amber) turn indicators.
