I gotta dig...
But there was a cool gear to tire size to driving purpose thread I came across once.

It all depends on what you want. Milage or power. 4.10 or 4.56 are your choices

This may help you decide

4.10s will put you back to stock rpms at highway speeds

Definitely 4.10
You're rpms would be rather high with 4.56
It's a perfect combo for those with an aw4 though

I think I paid around 1200 parts and labor. That was a few years ago, I'm not sure if the price of the gears has gone up at all since then.

About $500 for gears and master rebuild kits, $70 for a D30 3.73 and higher carrier and I heard $350 an axle for installation.

I would purchase rear axle bearings and have them replaced while the axles are out.

Now this is based on HP Dana 30 and Chrysler 8.25 in a 1998 Jeep.

RPMs with 4.56 gears at 70 mph is about 2800 on 33" tires.

If you are going for 4.10s, the cheapest thing to do is get a complete front end from a 4 cyl XJ and swap the whole thing in yourself. Then you only have the rear to worry about

who da what swap what

The 4cyl XJs have 3.54s, 4.10s or 4.56s stock, so it would be easier and cheaper to just swap the whole axle(s) from the 4cyl XJ to your XJ.

That is a standard pinion yoke that will fit either a D44 or D30. The yoke has 26 splines in it to fit the 26 spline pinion
