Hi everyone! I am from NC and I don't actually have a jeep yet, but am on the hunt to regain my favorite vehicle that I had in high school. It was an 86 wagoner limited inline 6. I need your advice and help to get it. I am currently looking at an 88 Cherokee a guy is asking $1300 for. The body is in pretty good shape but it has 217,000 miles on it doesn't smoke or knock or overheat. The only thing is the headliner is down and the steering is a little loose. I had almost 300,000 miles on the one I had in high school so I know it will last if maintained. But I need your opinion Is it worth $1300. Thanks in advance for any help or advice and love the forum. And I promise I will be back with an xj before to long!

Is it worth it is a relative thing. Prices vary in different parts of the country. The main thing is checking for rust. If it is good that way, the rest of what you mentioned is minor. The head liner is fixable for about $50. In my case I just ripped it out and haven't replaced the material yet. But the steering is probably fixable in a few minutes. The first thing to do is adjust the steering box. When you look at it have someone saw the steering wheel back and forth. This will show you if anything is worn. Trac bar bushing is common to fix. They wear out. But you will be able to see if tie rod ends are OK etc and get a better idea on what it will take to make it tight again. If it is going to need parts, talk him down. They will need to be replaced before you can lift it or it will get death wobble

I don't know, I guess we're getting into "classic" territory now! I picked up a 99 XJ with 140k miles for about $2300. So to me $1300 would be too much. It really goes back to what you want though. I wonder what Kelly Blue Book (kbb.com) says the price should be. hmm....

Thanks for the advice guys! I was thinking along the same lines about looking it over with someone turning the wheel after reading a few posts on adjusting the steering box. And that was a nice score for $2300 everyone around here wants that for a real pos. But he is asking $1300 strait out. He is looking for a different car that's better on gas and I have an escort that I am wanting to trade him that is well worth $1600 or i'm gonna keep it. So I was thinking about mabye getting at least $300 to boot and mabye more depending how loose the steering is and if it needs new parts or not. So thanks for the replies guys.

No doubt. Thanks again! I will be back with an xj regardless if it is this one or not because I have been without one for far too long driving a car every day isn't that much fun anymore.
