Just replaced the starter on the 97 ZJ and the same day, it started knocking load as heck.?.?.? I pulled the pulled the valve cover and checked the rocker arms, push rods, and springs. All checked ok. I really don't want to pull the head if not needed to, but I have read that the flywheel could be cracked or a torque converter may have a loose bolt, bit have also noticed it is a common problem after a starter replacement. I am tired of throwing parts on this thing and am at my breaking point to burn it to the ground. Any help would be awesome.:sad0147:

I haven't read anything like that, so I guess I need an education. It is a common problem on high milage Jeeps to have loose torque converter bolts. It doesn't cost anything to fix that. Just pull the inspection cover in front of the bell housing

We just had the tranny rebuilt a year ago and put in a new converter with the build, it's been fine every since don't know of any way the bolts would back out now but it's worth a shot and lots better than pulling the head. Any experience with replacing lifters???

I never heard the torque converter but have with the flywheel bolts loosening and supposedly it has a ticking/knocking in some cases. Can you pinpoint the basic area where its coming from?

If you rev the engine (while in park) you'll heard the knock speed up go away then return when the engine goes back to idle.

I couldn't believe how lose mine were, and very relieved.

That is kinda what the wifes did. It would knock quite while idle and when you throttled up it would stop until around 3000 rpm, then get really load. Still, only thing not new on her ZJ is the motor.

Well my XJ is is knocking now. At idle and when i goose it a bit it gets louder. But while driving even on the freeway its quiet. About 48 psi oil pressure while at idle. Hot its about 35 to 38 psi. What do ya think? Check the torque converter bolts?
