I recently purchased a 97 Cherokee Country. My problem is I have an issue with it starting in gear, it's an automatic and I put a new NSS on it and the problem still exists. It even starts with the NSS unhooked if that makes sense. It's still throwing 3 codes. P0705 P1694 P1698. Can someone please help. It's driving me crazy bc its gotta be right for inspection.

if the TCM is shorting it could be an issue. clean your ground wires and connections.

How does it drive? Those last two codes relate to the PCM.... and lack of signal.

If I unplug the tcm should it still start? It runs great and shifts perfect.

It sounds like you may have a wiring issue from the tranny to the plug by the top of the dipstick. the last to codes look to be from the nss being unhooked. give this a try

1. Check the range sensor input in all of the different gear shift selector positions.

2. The Brown/Light Green wire should have 12 volts in reverse.

3. The Light Green/Black wire has 12 volts in overdrive.

4. The Violet wire has 12 volts in drive 3.

5. The Violet/White wire has 12 volts in first and second.

6. The White wire has 12 volts any time the key is on.

7. The Black/White wire is grounded in park or neutral.

When I had the scan tool hooked up I could watch the shifter go through the gears. I got reverse lights now, I didn't have them before. Should it start with the switch unhooked?

P0705 = Trans Range Switch Circuit
P1694 = Tachometer Circuit High Voltage
P1698 = No messages received from the electronic transmission control module or the Aisin transmission controller.

Sounds like its something in the TCM (Transmission Control Module).....
Since you swapped out the NSS.... did you reset the vehicles computer?
This will clear all codes, and reset the ECU's adaptive memory.
To do this, turn the key off....
Disconnect the positive battery terminal from the battery.... wait a moment ....Then hold it to a good ground for about 30 seconds.....
This will discharge the capacitors that retain voltage and keep the ECU's memory.
Re-install the battery terminal, and ensure all connections are good and tight, and of course free of corrosion.
Turn the ignition to ON, (do not start the engine) then cycle the head lights on and off.
Turn the key all the way off, then start the engine.
You codes should clear, and the engine may run a little funny for several heat cycles while it learns the new operating parameters.
If this doesnt clear your issue, then you may have to start looking into whats causing the problem..... which to me sounds like something between the TCM and maybe the distributor (thats where the tach signal comes from usually)

What I would do is locate the TCM it is usually located under the instrument panel. It is at the driver side of the lower finish panel:
http://www.justanswer.com/uploads/VLADGMRU/2009-07-09_075453_TCM.jpg

It will look something like this:

Look at all the connections, make sure there is no corrosion, or broken wires, and that the harness/plug is securely pressed into the unit.
If you need to replace it, you can find them used for anywhere from $30-$100 or buy re-manufactured ones from about $180-$300 .... this is just average, and you may find better or worse deals where you're at.

I hope this helps!

P1694 came up as CCD message from Jtec failure.

Just in case .....

It might be worthwhile going over the wiring to see if the PO put a bypass in.

Normally ... according to writeups ... its a paperclip or something just as dodgy, jammed in the firewall wiring connector.

The NSS grounds the coil on the starter relay so it can operate. When the NSS does not work usually from being dirty, then the starter will not engage. So, since it starts in all gears, the problem is likely a permanently grounded starter relay. You have two options. You can use an ohm meter to find the ground by unplugging it and checking meticulously. These can be hard to find. Or you can run a new wire from the ground, which is the lower right terminal to the NSS, which is much easier. You can run it in the loom and disguise it so the inspectors don't have a cow about it.

It doesn't appear that the connectors were touched until I replaced the nss. I don't see any kind of tampering with wires or anything along those lines.

Then you have a ground. Just replace the wire and it should be fixed

Would said relay throw the codes I'm getting? I'm usually good at diagnosing issues but this ones getting to me. Haha

I don't see how. I think the relay itself is operating properly

I've been googling stuff all morning. Could the crank sensor throw those codes?

No, it would not. Please disconnect the battery cables for a few minutes and touch them together and drive it for awhile. This will reset the computer and clear codes and then we can go from there. Replacing that wire is a good idea now too then we can deal with only one issue at a time.

Ok. I'll do that when I get off work. And I'll let you know what happens.

4.3LXJ what wire am I replacing for the starter relay. I'm trying to comprehend it, but I'm confused.

No problem

After you have disconnected the battery and touched the two wire terminals together, you will see the codes gone. Next replace that wire (supplement it actually) as 4.3 suggests. Then start and drive the Jeep for awhile (up to operating temp at least) If all problems are gone then quit. If not let us know for your next step.

I figured out the starting issue. As you all stated the po jumped it. He had the wire his under the fuse block.

Codes are gone, check engine light is off and it's off to the inspection station Saturday.

Make sure you drive it a little extra first. If they checked right now they would know you disconnected and cleared the codes. Put a half tank through it. Go for a nice drive

I'll do that. And thanks again for your help.
