Here is what Jeep is going to do

Jeep Grand Cherokees 1999-2003 "Customer Service Action"
Jeep Grand Cherokee 1993-1998 "Customer Service Action"
Jeep Liberty 2002-2007 "Safety Recall"

About 1.2 million Grand Cherokees from the 1999 to 2004 model years will be part of the "customer service action." Owners will get notices saying their vehicles are fine if they have factory or Chrysler trailer hitches. Dealers will inspect other trailer hitches to make sure they're secure. But if the Jeeps don't have trailer hitches, Chrysler won't do anything, maintaining that the Jeeps are safe and do not need any changes. A Chrysler spokesman was not sure how many of the SUVs are without trailer hitches.

What a joke all this time and money to shut up that lady

Our '93 didn't come with either a hitch or skid, although we have put a hitch on since then. There's no way we're taking it in, wouldn't trust a stealership anyways. Probably find something that "NEEDS" to be replaced... immediately!

Like i said before I've been in an accident where we were rear-ended in a wj with no hitch or skid and the tank was just fine.

Just read an article that said there is a limit on the age of vehicles recalled. At 10 years the limit would make most WJs and all ZJs exempt.

Just heard the recall doesn't cover WJs. The tank on them is behind the rear seat and is not affected.

I have a hitch on my vehicle 1 1/4 square tubing receiver type but I don't know if it was factory or previous owner installed. I called jeep dealer ship and recall is in effect except for the transmission detent recall (tranny comes out of gear in park) Any idea if this is an aftermarket hitch or came from factory?

if it is a quality hitch I would not worry about it being factory or not

prefer 2inch with more than 300 tongue and 3500lbs total capacity

The weight of a xj varies by year 3057 to 3500 lbs with a load capacity of 2500 lbs. If your looking at the 2" just for strength I would go for it but I would not pull anthing that weighs more than your jeep

boat or enclosed trailer 6x12 trailer would probably be the most.

those would be alright as long as they don't exceed the load capacity
