My 2001 cherokee sport is leaking mass quantities of oil from the rear of the engine I'm womdering if its the rear main seal which seems to be a fairly prevalent problem with these but it leaks even when its not running so I'm not sure if that rules out the rear main seal as the cause or not?

In any case it will be a good place to start..... To do the rear main seal you will also be replacing the oil pan gasket, And if you want to cover all the bases, replace the valve cover gasket at the same time. Those three right there are the top three culprits as far as oil leaks on the 4.0L goes....the next one down would be the oil filter adapter o-ring.

There's lots of good info on the web on how to replace your own rear main without dropping the tranny.
Here's one: http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoRearMain.htm

Here's another good one...pretty straight forward: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=101118

And one of my more personal favorites: http://dailydriventj.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=811

Also...... here's part 1 of a two part video that shows some good techniques on this procedure as well:

.....hope this helps!

Don't forget the 3 O-rings that are on the oil filter adapter. This is a common place for a leak, and from what I have read looks much like a rear main seal leak.
