P0456: EVAP System very small leak

P0455: EVAP System large leak

The guy at the auto shop says the small leak can be from the gas cap not being on tight enough. We look at all the fuel lines for any leaks but didnt see anything but he thinks it could be the canister going bad. He cleared the codes and said we should wait and see if they come back. I wanted to get your guys input on what you think it could be. I do not notice anything wrong with the Jeep on performance or sluggishness.

Bought a new locking gas cap from NAPA and installed it yesterday, light came on in less than 24 hours.

This thread is in reference to http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=14303&page=2 since I am a newb and dont know how to change the title.

Going to give this a look over. If anyone else has any input, please post it up.

Well, I finally got a chance to get under the truck after working 2 weeks straight.

Here is what I found:

As you can see here (barely due to Ipod cam) there is some dry rot on one of the line (lit up by the flashlight, has a black 'stripe' that is the dry rot) that connects to the back of the intake manifold. I dont know if that would cause the leak but im sure I should replace it. Any one know a place online that would have the item/part numbers?

While I was looking under my hood I noticed:

:shocker::shocker::shocker::shocker: Time to get a new belt.

Ok, so now moving down the lines all the way down to the EVAP canister I found this at a "T":

I have a feeling that this could be the reason for my check engine light.

Funny part is that when I bought the XJ from the dealership I had a check engine light come on right after I bought it. They fixed it for free and here is what they said about it:

I never thought to check but that is one of the two codes I am getting now. Makes me wonder which line they fixed and if the others should be replaced if they are slowly going to crack.

PS...

My wife lost a fender part while driving on the freeway here:

So can excessive speed rip the XJ apart?

LOL, I never have seen excessive speed and XJ used in the same sentence before.

Ha ha, excessive speed. No, things can fall off over time. But it sounds like you may have found the leak

Any idea what that 'end cap' thing is called? Also, what brands do you suggest on a belt.

Gates of Goodyear have been alright for me. But of the two, I think the Goodyear was better. An end cap is an end cap. A good parts store will have one. Just give them the diameter of what is being capped

The one on the backside of the intake, can I just replace the 90 angle or do I have to replace the whole line?

Can you point me to a Goodyear link? I googled and went to Amazon for the wrong end cap.

After learning how those flares are held on I'm surprised mine stayed on for as long as they did.

You may be able to replace just part of it, but it's obvious that the rubber is breaking down, you'll save yourself headache in the future by replacing the entire thing. That probably means more lines are marginal as well.

Do we have a diagram to find out part numbers? I am hitting a wall on finding a link or something online. I seriously cant find anything but the belt I need to replace. Amazon or Napa are dead ends.

You might not find exact replacements apart from factory ... but there should be a bunch of stuff that will do the job ....

Last time I chased down an evap leak on my wife's 01, it ended up being easier (but spendier) to go down to the local shop and have them hook it up to their smoke machine. Took 5 min to find a crack that I would not have found visually.

Jeep wanted much more for the formed hose, about $80 IIRC. I formed my own from fuel hose for $3

I would have to go to the European Jeep dealership here and pay with Euros. They told me it would cost me 400 Euros for them to swap out my pinion seal :eek::eek:

I just patched the pinon the best I could until we get stateside.
