Case study 1994 Grand Cherokee, 271,XXX Kms on the odometer, 4.0L auto.

Scenario oil was changed 2 days ago.

Day one: on start up idle is rough like timing is retarded. Next lifer/rocker tick is evident.

Day two: oil pressure is 2-3 bars low at idle and at 3,000rpm not reading at even the half way point on the OEM gauge. Idle and lifter/rocker tick is worse.

So I decided to pull the "partsmaster" filter as it all began after the oil change,.. It was VERY hot to the touch that had me thinking,..

With the stock pile of Jeeps I have at the house I have some good quality filters always in stock.

So when I removed the filter I compared it to a quality Baldwin filter.

I replaced the "partsmaster" filter with the Baldwin, replaced the lost oil and ran the same tests. The Jeep responded very positively and idle oil pressure is higher than 3,000 rpm pressue with the old filter. We have regained previous oil pressure before the change , noise and odd idle seem to be corrected for now.

Had a similar happening on our former work truck -'07 Chervrolet 3500 6.0l. Since new we ran AC Delco filters every oil change. One time, the parts store was closed that carried them and we needed it bad. So we got a WIX filter at another parts store. Not long after it was changed we started hearing a definite valvetrain tap. So, next oil change came early and swapped back to the AC Delco and it returned to normal.

Not all are created equal. I ALWAYS run k&n oil filters in the xj, pricey but worth it.

I've always used a Mopar OEM oil filter on my Jeep and I'd never use anything else. They're cheap enough so if you buy a half dozen of them, they'll last you for quite a while.

I run Motorcraft filters on everything. Have never had a problem with them and not expensive.

I use the Mobile One filter, over sized. Used Fram for years then found out how bad they were. At least that some opinions I've read. Oil is too critical to the engine. I'll spend a couple of extra bucks on a good filter.

I've run Fram for many years on everything, as has everyone in my family.... I have been running Mopar filter the last couple of oil changes though... every since I heard about them sucking in or causing issues with the 4.0.. I wish I could find something online that showed what oversize filter from Mopar will work with the XJ!!

I don't believe Mopar makes an over size filter for it. You look up most Mopar sites and the most common filter everyone is using is the FL1A. Both Mopar and motorcraft filters are made by purolator.

Might be interesting to some.

Ive seen that Fram thing a bunch of times. Over on another forum, there is a good article that one of the mods did of his visit to their factory, and fram's response to the youtube video that sparked what appears to be the gospel truth to online forum junkies.

I would bet that the people who had an engine blow up because of XYZ filter had more going than just the filter issue. Could it be a failed oil pump? Bad valves? relying on snake oils like SeaFoam to fix things instead of proper maintenance?

Could any company have 1 bad filter get out there? Yes. Are many of these filters made in the same factory with different labels (Wix and Mopar? K&N is an overpriced Champion....) and more marketing than science? yes. You want to see real results, get your oil tested, keep good records. If there is filter material getting into the oil stream, testing would show it. I know Blackstone labs is very trusted for analysis.

My opinion... but thats through multiple vehicles with no oil pressure / filter issues over the last few decades. As long as the filter works, and is changed in time, you are good.
