Hi,
Thanks for adding me to the group. I actually don't own an XJ yet but am in the market for one as we speak. I've always been a big Jeep fan and learned how to drive on a 1974 J-10. I hope to learn more about you guys (and from you!) in the near future. Thanks again,
-Abe

Thanks, I'm looking at this 99 XJ 4WD, 4.0 tonight. Engine had a top-end rebuild at 160k and now has ~200k. Here is the link <http://orlando.craigslist.org/cto/3791235685.html> Let me know if there is anything I should watch out for with this, I'm a little concerned about the engine but the seller says she has full documentation from the shop that did the work and that it is running beautifully.

Check for rust, crawl underneath and look at the floor boards, both front and rear.

The 99s are generally noted as being the best year for the 4x4 Cherokee.

I don't know about the price though, maybe start at $2000?

Generally speaking a 4.0L engine doesn't need that kind of work at 160k miles. I'd be a little concerned as to why the work was done. Overheated and warped a head maybe? Might want to find out why and then how it was resolved. Machine shop shaved the head, or it was replaced. It's good that 40k miles have been put on it since. Good sign it was done right I mean.

I agree this looks like a more base model XJ and 2800 seems a bit high at least for the Houston area.

Welcome! At first glance, it looks like a good Jeep. Check out everything and inspect what you can when you see it in person. Always start lower like $2,000 like was said, and work your way up to a middle point. I'm guessing that they are asking that price due to the rebuild, and they may not want to back down too much. Would I still buy it if I had the cash? If everything checks out, probably. It's getting harder and harder to find a working Cherokee in good condition these days! It may be another 6 months before you find another... then again you may find another one later today ;)

I just checked KBB.com and for a 99 base model with 40k miles (I know, but this is best case scenario), FAIR value from a private party seller is over $5k in your area. Even at 200k miles the fair value is $2,950

Hey Abe. Welcome to xjtalk, glad to have ya here. I always suggest find any faults and use them to help get the price down, like... "Well i would have to replace this and it costs.."

Well guys, it took a lot of will power but I resisted the urge to buy this one. It had trouble shifting in and out of 4wd and she said the engine was rebuilt because it was "ran without oil for a while." Back to searching Craigslist again!

Yeah, that "without oil" thing would put me off it too. Good luck with the search.
