I have been reading up about the SYE and people are saying you should upgrade the drive shaft due to length issues. What is the cut off point for using the stock drive shaft?

You have the change the rear drive shaft when you install a SYE. Some people use the hack and tap along with a front drive shaft.

I was 4.5 with stock shaft with no problems. anything more than that you would probally need a SYE.

Rustys suggest 3 or more but in your experience you would suggest 4.5?

I think this is subjective and depends on year and whose lift you use. The 87 and up seem to be more sensitive to driveline vibes than earlier models. Although I think I can straighten any of them out, but that is the consensus. Many people insist that a 3" lift on your 01 would need an SYE

Do you mean '97 and up, Steve? I've heard that as well. And yes, i agree. Its really circumstantial, based on the vehicle. Some need them at 3", others are fine at 6". Mine personally, i have actual 5.5" lift in the rear and run a 3/4" t-case drop and just very slight vibes when slowing at a certain speed.

No, I have an 86. Nothing in this discussion really applies to me because of all the parts replaced, and it is getting worse :D

Oh, okay. I've heard it about the '97+, that's why i thought maybe.

Stock worked fine on my 4.5. keep in mind that Rustys wants to sell you something. Not there is anything wrong with that.

Depends on if you want to run a TC drop or not... I'm close to 7.5" of lift with just a TC drop and the stock rear shaft... I am planning on ordering a SYE and new shaft though... so I can have the proper setup for the height that I'm at... but I have no wobbles or anything with just a TC drop...

I guess I am trying to ask, if I need a SYE would I need a new drive shaft?

Yes if you get an SYE, then you need a new driveshaft. It has a different type of U joint called a double cardan on it.

Here is a link for Tom Woods Drivelines so you can do some research

Also, look at your front driveshaft. It is the type you will need. You will notice it is different than the rear driveshaft.
