View Full Version : Instrument Cluster Circuit Board Swap??

Hey,
Since I'm going to be FIXING what the PO did to the wiring under my dash... I thought I'd change up the color of my instrument panel.
That is after I get it functional again. I replaced all the lights and maybe 1/2 work. :bang:
~ so with the lights on, I get the right (upper and lower) of my spedo, the full side of my fuel, and the oil gauge. :noevil:

I can hit the pick'n pull for a replacement circuit board for $15 or less. But need to know if I can use one from any year... or does it have to be semi specific to mine?

ie. Can I use a '96 circuit board in my '89?

Then, once all is functional again, I found some cool BLUE led's that I'm going to swap for the OEM.
Does anyone know which lights are instrument bulbs?
** I only want to make those blue since the blue bulbs cost twice what the white ones cost ~ and blue thought the red filter of the turn signal would be a waste of light.

... Anyway, I don't know what all is on that cluster other than the turn-signal and brights indicator as nothing really lights up anyway.

I just came across a thread (wrangler forum) that recommended cleaning it with alcohol and dielectric grease... As long as there are no cracks and such.
I'm going to try that tomorrow.
Fingers crossed
... like my eyes!

Take pictures of your connectors of the gage cluster. That way you'll know if it'll work or not :) can you post a link of where you got your bulbs please?

The '96 cluster board isn't going to work. The '91 and up speedometers are electronic, while '87-'90 are mechanical. If it comes down to it that you do need one, its gonna have to be from a '87-'90.

On the LEDs, i believe the older models run nine bulbs for the backlighting on the gauges. Basically there will be two bulbs for the turn signal indicators and one for the high beam indicator, all others you will want to swap out.

Sorry, but i doubt either of those will work. The first ones look too wide to fit through the holes, unless you want to remove the gauges to put them in. The second ones are T5 bulbs, you need T10s aka 194s. And for best results go with a 360° bulb.

I would suggest something like this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-x-T10-194-168-2825-5-x-5050-SMD-LED-Blue-Super-Bright-Car-Lights-Lamp-Bulb-/121052439847?pt=US_Car_Lighting&hash=item1c2f49a527&vxp=mtr

Those are the ones I was looking at... but didn't have the link for jeepacorn. So I found something close ... and did note "basically like these"
Maybe could have been more clear that there were some that specifically were listed for xj's

Actually, I pulled the cluster out and cleaned up the entire assembly.
As long as the bulbs (or led replacements) fit through the opening, they should work.
I did find it to be an odd setup. The bulbs are positioned behind the instruments with plenty of room. The only limiting factor is the opening (and the connector).
Otherwise, it's like shining a flashlight around the corner?
I ordered the bulbs you linked me to as they were $10 for 10 of them. The ones I found were $4.50 per pair.
I'll take some before / after photos and post 'em.

... also, the board was just really corroded. Nothing some 300 grit sandpaper couldn't fix. Then I used dielectric grease on each connector to keep them clean going forward.

Thanks! That's cool! How many do you need for the dash?

9 for dash lights + 3 for turn signals and brights indicator.
And the link is for a 10 pack for $10.
...I made a new thread on the dash cluster with the basic cleanup... and a before/after of the white bulbs.
& will post it with the blue when they get here.
If you can find ultra bright ~ that'd be even better

Whoa Dave, the 9 bulbs is for 87-90.

Naomi, sorry but I've never had a newer model so i don't know how many or what kind. Hopefully someone else who has done it on a newer model will post it up.

The newer models have different bulbs 194 don't fit there smaller but I think there was 12 in mine all together I can't remember off hand been awhile since I pulled the cluster out and realized I had the wrong bulbs, so I put the leds in my 94 :D

That's what I get for Ass~uming...

If you go to either e-bay motors or amazon and do an item search for your year/make/model and "dash lights", it should get you rolling in the right direction.
... or go to AutoZone / OReilly / NAPA and find the bulb with #...
Then do an ebay / amazon search on that bulb # and LED. You should get to the right point.

Otherwise, the process should be very similar.
